MCAT Prep Book along with Undergrad Courses

I have read that it is recommended for undergrads to buy a MCAT prep book to compliment their required courses. What mcat prep books do you recommend?

This doesn’t seem like good advice to me, and I have never heard it before. You can’t supplement your coursework with an MCAT prep book. Prep books tend to be reviews of material; in other words, they assume you’ve already taken the coursework.

Don’t try and supplement your coursework with a prep book, that doesn’t make any sense. Instead, do well in your classes and make sure you learn the material properly. When it comes time to study for the MCAT, use a prep book.

I would recommend it. I actually benefited a lot from doing that while I was taking orgo. Prep books give you tips that profs usually don’t give you and these could give you an edge compared to your classmates. Just use them as a supplement and you’ll be alright.

I’ve never read that. At the same time, if you are looking for a review guide or some way of better understanding the material due to deficits in the course by all means. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a MCAT book, in fact I’d probably recommend against that because of the fact that the MCAT is very pick and choose on the topics it covers, especially O-Chem.

MCAT doesn’t test coursework; it tests MCAT –> MCAT prep books don’t teach/review their science; they teach/review MCAT as it pertains to that science (or VR/writing). The only thing I would use an MCAT prep book for while taking the prereqs is, perhaps, to get to know which parts of those classes you need to know like the back of your hand and which ones you just need to know well enough to earn your A and move on.
