I took an MCAT Verbal the other day, In the correct allotted amount of time and everything, and scored an 11. Is this a competitive score for med school applicants? And, can I expect it to go up, since I'm just a senior in high school, or because its verbal aptitude and not science, will it stay about the same? Thanks

i am a senior also.. i haven't taken the mcat verbal, but i did really well on the sat verbal.. was it like that? what was ur sat v score?

where did you get the test from? online or did you buy a prep book?

11 is a good score. get 11s on the other sections and that's not bad at all.

11 is very good. If you score 11 on the other sections as well, that's a 33 (roughly puts you in the 90th percentile). Also, verbal averages tend to be the lowest of the three averages.

However, that said, I don't think it's very easy to improve much. Your reading comprehension skills are probably not going to get much better that this point. When I took the SAT I, I didn't even bother studying for the verbal section (outside of doing some practice problems) because it was not something I could really improve in.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you score on the verbal section of the SAT's?

710V, Never retook as a senior though lol.... 1350 total

Oh and I printed out the test online on whatever the official MCAT website is... dont remember now.

It wasn't altogether that dissimilar from the SAT, but the reading passages were set up a bit different, and the questions were more straightforward, but more difficult.

sweet.. looks like that wont be a problem l8er in college..

thanks for the info!

by the way: have u looked at the other two sections? how hard was the physics? Was it similar to the AP (difficulty level)?

Ha... I decided that taking the other two sections would only depress me at this point, I glanced at the physics and could do a few... but Ive only done honors phys so.... im waiting til college to do that. :-)

11 is an OK score... to be honest. It won't get you near Wash U. or Harvard though. If you've done AP Physics C and AP Chem, you are set for the Physical Sciences test. For Biology section however, you need more biology than AP (you should learn more physiology) and also Organic Chemistry.

Hope this helps.

I beg to differ. Harvard med school's avg. is actually only 34 (10.5 on verbal). Obviously, they still reject lots of people who apply with 34 and above, but you can get into Harvard with a 11 on the verbal section.

Wow...you guys just get done with the SATs and then you want to hit up the MCAT already? If you don't mind me asking, why are you guys in such a hurry? Is there really a need to start being so competitive for med school this early? Do you guys enjoy being teenagers or would you rather be 35 and making 6 figures, but working long shifts and never really getting a chance to take a break? Med school is a fantastic endeavor, but I don't understand why you need to rush.

the competition is really intense, if you dont want to get left in the dust you need to start now, its an ongoing process until your actually in.

I actually applaud laceycheer for having the foresight (or at least the curiosity) to look at the MCAT so early. I didn't look at the format at all until this past winter and I'm planning on taking it this August.

thanks norcalguy!

and to the other poster... I assure you I have a perfectly normal non- obsessive life. I'm not going crazy over getting into med school already, all I did was take an hour and a half out of a study hall to see where I stand.
