Hello,
I’ve seen many people ask this question, but I also need help. I’m a white conservative Christian that is from a private school in Houston. Most of the top students at my school choose A&M over Texas, so this is why it’s so difficult. I have an older bro that attends A&M along with an identical twin that is going there next year. I am intrested in Double Majoring with Marketing or Management with Statistics or Sports Management, but Texas A&M doesn’t allow Double majors if you are in the business school. Texas A&M is very comfortable to me while UT is more of that higher risk, higher reward school. Any advice or tips you have would be absolutely helpful!!
You and your twin going to rival schools? What’s this world coming to? UT is an especially hard business program to get into, unless you’re already in it. If you’re not in it, you might as well go to Texas A&M because your chances of getting in as an existing student are 10% with an average GPA of 3.9. A&M is not quite so absurdly selective, even though their rankings are virtually identical to UT. Plus you’ll have a roommate!
On the other hand, UT is very liberal. Austin is like a little blue bubble in the middle of a huge red state. If you’re a proud white Christian conservative, UT can be a very unfriendly place. Texas A&M is the exact opposite, hence the rivalry. They were founded as a military college. Texas conservative is part of the Aggie culture. If you’re a proud conservative, You’ll be much happier at A&M.
I have already been accepted into both which is awesome, but now it’s choosing time. I love Austin, but idk how much I would fit in there. I haven’t been away from my twin hardly at all and we have the same exact interests. I am conservative and white, but I spend most of my summers in Ann Arbor so it wouldn’t be new to me to be around that atmosphere. I think I’m “afraid” to turn down the more selective school when I know I’ll be more comfortable at A&M.
Selective only means “selective.” It doesn’t mean better Bachelors degrees are fairly well standardized and both schools are virtually identical in rankings and recruitment job offers. Plus Texas A&M has more flexibility if you find out you want to do something else. That’s a big wild card, because the average college student changes their major at least once. I changed mine more times than I can count.
I am attending Texas A&M Univeristy this fall also. I feel more at home there than Austin. The thing about A&M is that everyone there is friendly as heck and it’s true that UT is full of annoying liberals. Although, UT is a higher ranked school, I don’t think you should use that as a factor in your decision but rather where you think you will feel most happy at I also live in Houston lol and have an identical twin sister but she is attending the University of Oklahoma, and I honestly am glad we are not attending the same school because I am so much different when I am not with her, I can be myself and not be seen as “the twin” ya know. Hope you choose A&M I am so proud to be a future Aggie!
Also, you’re closer to home and congrats haha
I’ll take a different tack : this is your chance to establish abm.separate Identity from your twin. Now’s the time to do it, not when you are starting out in a workplace.
If you’re ok with Austin, then the issue is, will there be enough conservative Christians at UT? So, you need to reach out to Cru to have their opinion about your going there and email a branch of your church near campus to see if they welcome students (so they you have a ‘church home’ away from home).
To be fair to Texas, the ‘Austin is an island of blue in an expense of red’ thing is at least 10 years out of date. The fastest growing US cities are in Texas, fueled by the tech industry, bringing in people from all over the country including Silicon Valley and the Boston tech corridor, so Texas urban areas are mostly purple now.
Austin itself IS liberal but the student body represents many of the top students in Texas and they aren’t all liberal so my guess is that you’ll be entirely fine.
Definitely McCombs. Located in a great and sprawling city, opportunities for more prestigious employers, and the campus life (along with 6th street) just tops it all off!
If you got into the business school don’t switch to sports management. My daughter majored in that at A&M and it’s hard to get a professional level job in that field.
A&M appeals much more to conservative Christians so no surprise that a Houston (religious?) private school sends more to A&M. Same is true of a couple Christian private schools in Dallas. There are plenty of Christian outlets at UT as well. There were plenty for me at UH. I worked at a Fortune 50 corporation in Plano and we recruited undergrads from SMU, UT and TCU (lesser extent). I also worked at an investment bank in NYC and they recruited from UT, SMU and Rice. Maybe you’ll find it a bit easier to excel at A&M and there are still plenty of corporate options. If you feel comfortable at UT and the cost is roughly the same, I recommend that one.
