McGill '26 Application Cycle

Well it is November now, and I also cannot enter. My school is semester and while they do a quarter grade card, it is not on the transcript or reported to colleges. My grades on that contain a few Bs (the first of my hs career) so I’m not too keen to report them either. So when we can finally enter the self reported grades… what should they be?

One idea that comes to mind is to wait to report the grades until the semester is over, by which time perhaps those Bs will become As. The deadline for self-reporting grades is March 15, so it seems like that ought to be an option.

Usually not until very end of November early December

Any update here. Are any US high schools able to self-report grades in Minerva yet.

We still see “It is not posssible to submit self-reported grades at this time: for more details pls see Self-reporting for high schools in the U.S.A.” on Minerva. The McGill link there says : date TBD.

Is it typically this late or even later ?

May be wrong, but I believe this is the first year Mcgill has done US self-reporting. It also still is not possible for me to submit grades.

It occurred to me that McGill may be intentionally holding off on allowing U.S. applicants to submit grades until Early Decision/Restrictive Early Action decisions are released, which is generally mid-December.

I would guess that a good number of ED/REA applicants would otherwise apply to McGill as a hedge, and McGill would rather not have to review those applications if they don’t have to, particularly given the increased application numbers from last year.

So now I’m not expecting the grade input portal to open until after mid-December. Just a guess though.

Last year, my son was not able to complete his McGill application until late January, based on when his mid-year grades were available from his high school. He still heard back very quickly from the two faculties to which he applied (1 week for the first, 3 weeks for the second). However, I know that there were other US applicants who waited longer for McGill’s decisions.

They may have changed the process this year, but am hoping the above may be helpful regardless.

Thank you.

The issue is that the ability to input any and all grades has not opened yet for U.S. high school applicants. In prior years it was open by now.

That makes sense. My perspective was that last year, they wouldn’t even look at the application until the official grades were available, and for us that was end of January, but his application was still given full consideration. So I was thinking that the delay in opening up the inputting screen will hopefully not be a problem.

Update. Minerva now says that the portal for reporting grades for U.S. applicants will be open in mid-December (date TBD), so I do think they are waiting out successful U.S. Early Decision applicants to weed them out of the McGill application pool up front.

The US Self-report is open now.

I am having trouble making heads of tale from the US Self Reporting form. According to the website, we are supposed to indicate Course Length as “Final Term” if a single-semester course is completed with a grade and then list the Semester/Term as “Final”, too?

J. Indicate the Course Length.

‘Final Grade’ is to be used to:

  • Report one final grade for any completed course in 9th, 10th, and 11th grade. If your year-long course (e.g. Physics) was split in two semesters with a different title in each semester (e.g. Physics A and Physics B), add each semester as a separate Final Grade’ course. Under the Semester/Term field, also select Final Grade’. Enter a grade for each course. You will be able to adjust the credit weight for each entry later. Note: if your courses are split into two semesters, each with their own grade, do not use this option if the course title is the same.

  • Report one final grade for any completed course in 12th grade if you have already graduated.

Notes:
If your 12th grade course is only one semester long, please select either Fall or Winter only when indicating the length of your course.

K. Select the Semester/Term when the course was taken.

Congrats! How did you handle the need for first term grades from 12th grade that are not In Progress? My son won’t have his first term grades until the end of January and we are trying to figure out if we should self report all other grades before then or just wait to submit all grades together. Thx for any thoughts and once again, congrats!

Were you accepted? Im thinking your must be on a qrt system, because semester grades wont be out for a few weeks in the US still.

i was!! and yeah we do use a quarter system so that could be why

thank you! my school uses a quarter system so i just put down my first quarter grades and then click IP for quarters 2-4. if your school uses a semester system then you probably just have to wait until first term grades come out. i think last year there were some people who got admitted just based on their grades from 9th-11th grade, but it’s probably best to just hold off on submitting the form until 1st semester grades come out. you could also call the admissions office but idk how helpful they’ll be. good luck to your son!!

Congrats!! I’m so anxious to get my grades submitted. I know what they are, but they are not official on a transcript yet so I guess I should wait?

This is so confusing and the instructions are different for McGill depending on which page you are looking at. My school has 2 semester grades, there is no “final” grade. So what do I enter for 9-11th grades? I had entered two semester grades, if I change to final it only allows entry of 1 grade. The courses all have the exact same name, so it’s unclear what to do here.
