Son uploaded 1st quarter grades in Nov., and 1st-semester grades last week (official transcripts for both) and his account still says “further review required.” Getting antsy… Should I call and make sure we’re not missing something?
@EditorNYC I’d call just to be safe.
We just went through this last fall!
Our daughter (US born CDN citizen) started in BioEng as a U1 (d/t AP credits). We paid CDN tuition at first and after 3 mos of residing in MTL, she sent in paperwork. If this is done before the last day of class in the semester and of course, accepted, families are reimbursed the difference between CDN and Quebec tuition for this semester.
You need to summit CDN certificate of citizenship, proof of activities in the last 10 yrs (letter from schools on letterhead), lease (all McGill students get one even if staying in residence) and 2 proofs of residing in MTL (cellphone bills with address, bank statements, etc…)!
With the Major Entrance Scholarship, it is a very sweet deal!
She loves McGill although she works extremely hard!!
Thank you for the information. What do the letters from the schools have to say, just the dates and grades attended?
@Taxlady4
Yes! Just the basics…person has attended school so and so from this date to that date and from grades…
Make sure it is on letterhead paper. She did all this after making her decision in the spring, took them with her.
When 3 mos came from border crossing, she went to Service Point with papers and had to do an attestation. Then she converted everything to PDF and uploaded it on McGill website. Her status changed in Minerva within 7-10 days! That easy!
Good luck and don’t hesitate if you have any more questions!
Thanks so much! Sounds pretty straight forward!
@TomSrOfBoston same situation with my son dual citizen born in states. how does the Quebec Residency work? Son got accepted to Desautels and CS programs with a 5K major scholarship.
@Mdoost ShrimpBurrito explained it in post #316. If he was born outside Canada and has not lived in Canada for more than 3 consecutive months he is eligible for Quebec tuition, after submitting documentation.
@Tomsrofboston and @taxlady4 aside from a bank statement to prove Quebec residency what other document did you use? I saw the list but cant think of anything else as son’s cell phone is billed to me not to him. Also how did you get the letter from his past school about the 10 years ago events? Please advise, thank you.
@Mdoost My D used correspondence from her Montreal bank from August and November. Same source, three months apart. We weren’t sure if that would be acceptable to McGill, but they did take it.
School letters: we asked school counselors to write a simple letter on school letterhead, stating that _____ was a student at their school during _____ dates.
McGill Service Point was helpful when we had questions. You can call them, as I think an email address is hard to find.
Good luck and congrats on the scholarship! Keep in mind a 3.7 GPA is required to keep the scholarship. Lots of students lose them at some point.
Need help regarding tuition!
My child was CDN citizen born in US and currently studying in US high school. He has been living with grand parents there, while we live and work in Ontario. If accepted to Mcgill, do we pay Quebec residents tuition? I think we pay domestic tuition as a CDN, but not sure if we are eligible for Quebec residents’ rate. Greatly appreciate any insight. Good luck to everyone.
Hi,
Could you explain this, according to what I researched that we pay domestic rate, but not in province Quebec rate? Thanks.
@Seablue2002 Did your student ever live in Canada for three cumulative months? If so then out of proince tuition would be paid. If not then Quebec tuition after providing all the documentation.
So if your student lives with you in Canada during the summers s/he would not qualify for Quebec tuition.

My daughter is still waiting to hear- US High School. We just uploaded her Mid-Term transcript. Her school only uses a weighted GPA. Does McGill take her grades and calculate UW GPA and is this on a 4.0 scale?
@momofthre3 Yes, they will recalculate on the 4.0 scale.
@TomSrOfBoston thank you. and assuming they look at the rigor of the courses? we are at a top public HS in MA. Can’t quite figure out how to compare…so many students have taken 5+ AP classes. This is not even option as a Junior. Our Honors are weighted same at AP classes. It’s very stressful.
@momofthre3 Rigor is considered if the unweighted GPA is close to the cutoff.

Thanks so much for the quick reply. We mostly visited him during the summer time, but he did stay with us sometime over the past years, honestly don’t remember if the stay was over three months or not. So if he stayed with us over three months in the past, he won’t be eligible for the first semester for the in province tuition, but still eligible stating from the following semester? Am I right on this? Thanks again. BTW, he also applied to some schools in Ontario, is the requirement same regarding tuition rate. For example, as we live and work in Toronto, as a dependent, is my child eligible for Ontario tuition ?
@Seablue2002 My undestanding is that if he has lived in Canada for three months he will pay the out of province tuition for the four years.
Ontario does not have an in province/out of province tuition split. All Canadians pay the same rate, hich is higher than the out of province rate at McGill
Thanks so much for the insight. If the policy for paying out of province tuition is true, then it’s not fair. Once the students stay in Quebec for some time, they are supposed to be treated like residents for the discounted rate. Oh well. Have a wonderful evening!
