Hey there everyone. I've just got into McGill and for those of you that go or have researched a bunch. How hard is all the work and how much free time do you have.

I have heard from a few people that McGill tends to be very work centered and you don't have much free time.

I am from the US and have gotten in to the Science program. I really don't have any idea what I am gonna major in.

When do you have to choose your major by?

Thanks

Hey! congrats

you have to choose your department by the time you register for classes in U1 (generally April or May of your first year...so registering for your second year courses). You formally declare your major end of your second year.

I'm in this grey area right now of "it's actually time for me to decide on a department and I don't have the faintest clue".

And I have free time. Not as much as people in arts, but still plenty of it. The work is hard but not unbearable, and in comparison with like Cornell science, it's not too bad.

If you take a 15 course load you will have free time. If you take an 18 or 19 credit load, you won't have much of it. So plan accordingly ;)

Thanks Harpgirl, nice to know that it wouldn't be deadly.

So, U0 is first year, U1 is second and so on?

Good luck on the whole choosing thing. I can imagine the time I'm gonna have with that choice. Ugh.

How easy was it for you to meet new people when you first started out last year?

If you're in Arts/Management/Education you'll have plenty of free time! If you're in Science- less. If you're in Engineering/Architecture/Music you'll have no free time. Well you will, but you'll feel bad for not working. Like me!

really easy. first off there's residence. Everyone living in rez pretty much knows no one or very few people. Therefore it's easy to get to know others since everyone's looking for friends. Secondly, there's frosh. This is a GREAT way to meet people. There are multiple types of frosh, so you can do different ones to meet different crowds of people. There's the one day Discover McGill, then Faculty Frosh, then SSMU frosh, then also there are others like FishFrosh (evangelical christian frosh), Radical Frosh (political activism frosh). Then in addition there's activities night where all the clubs come and have info. Join a club or two, that's another way to meet people.

It's not terribly scary ;) you'll be fine.
