I am a high school senior from Martha's Vineyard, MA. I was recently accepted to both St. Andrew's University in Scotland and Mcgill University in Montreal. I'm planning on majoring in History? Which school would you recommend?

for history? I’d definitely say st andrews, I’d recommend st andrews anywhere though because Mcgill is so big. Then again you would have the advantage of probably becoming fluent in french at Mcgill if you take any initiative because you’d be living in a french speaking city

Well, do you like Canada or Scotland more?

I visited Mcgill a few weeks ago and really enjoyed my time in Montreal, although the campus itself seemed very impersonal and did not afford a traditional college campus feel. I will not be able to visit St. Andrew’s before the start of the next school year. Right now I am trying to decide where I would rather spend the next 4 years of my life.

Hi, I am in almost the exact same situation. I’m a senior from New Hampshire. I was recently accepted to both Mcgill and St. Andrews as well. However, I’m planning on studying international relations. I also visited Mcgill, which I loved. I thought the city was amazing, that would be the downside for St. Andrews, the town only has three streets, but from what I’ve heard it is really beautiful there, the Scottish Highlands aren’t too far to the north. I have a friend who has been at Mcgill for two years and he loves it. If you want to study European history or anything along those lines it seems to me that studying it in Europe, which has such a long history, and is also close to places with an even longer history
would be really helpful. It’s really tough decision, one that I’m wrestling with too.

McGill is an urban university in the middle of downtown Montreal yet has a large defined campus with a surprising amount of green space considering its location. St. Andrews seems to be a remote college town. Attending a school so remote sight unseen is risky.

Is there a financial advantage to each school or is cost not an issue.

Cost is not an issue.

suzanneh8 where are you leaning?

Since cost is not an issue I would strongly suggest that you and a parent take an imprmptu trip to Scotland so that you can make an informed decision.

just bought my ticket.

Everyday it changes. However, for the last week I’ve been leaning towards Mcgill. It has strong academics, good language and ir program, skiing, and is in a city that speaks French, which is a language I’ve been learning. I’m also waiting for a decision from edinburgh, which has a stronger language program than st. andrews. I doubt if I will be able to go to Scotland to see the school as I’m already spending the year abroad. I would love to hear how you like it.

suzanneh8 - Changes for me everyday as well but I am also leaning Mcgill, you really can’t beat the location or availability of things to do in a city like Montreal. I will be sure to let you know everything once I visit st. andrews in a couple weeks. Is there any way I can contact you besides through this forum? Email? Skype? Text?

Committed to St. Andrews

Congratulations.
