McGill URGENT Housing Doubts.

Hi people. I have been accepted to McGill and I have a lot of doubts about the housing at McGill. So I was hoping if any of you could help clear all or some of my questions. I will be an undergraduate btw. (International)

  1. I have inferred from the website that students can only stay in McGill's residential system for the first year. Is this true? And is staying in McGill's residential system compulsory for all first year students, i.e. Do I have the possibility of living outside (renting an apartment etc) for my first year?
  2. I have also inferred that Laird hall in the MacDonald Campus is the cheapest McGill Residence. Is this correct? If not,
    which Residence is the cheapest?
  3. I understand that all residences have meal plans and also it is NOT Compulsory to choose that residences' meal plan. If I suppose do not choose that meal plan, what other options will I have?
  4. Let's suppose I do not go home for the summer. Will the hostels remain open during that time and if yes, will the meal plan still be available for purchase?

Finance is a concern for me and I would be grateful if you could suggest other cheaper alternatives. And some of my inferences may be fully wrong. I would be grateful if you could correct them too. Thanks a lot people.

If you are studying at the downtown campus it would be crazy to stay in residence at man campus.
Living in rez is not compulsory, it is available to first year students only…

yeah Tom. I get that. Living in Laird hall would be crazy as I am in McConnell School of Engineering. I also don’t want to live outside as I am an international and would rather leave the ‘household work’ to McGill.

And @TomSrOfBoston , Are McGill residences not available to 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students? Do all 2nd, 3rd, and 4th live outside?

@TomSrOfBoston , Could you answer 4?

Summer accommodation is available on campus. Correct, rez is only for first year students unless you become adon/resident assistant.

and @TomSrOfBoston , Are there courses available during the summers for which I can get credits? This would help me save a term at the end.

Yes, but limited, check the website
