Help!! I was just settling down today after a trip to C.Mellon. The school made a very, very good impression on me: I had my heart set on going there. My mom was ready to send the deposit. All of a sudden I get an e-mail from McGill saying that I had been admitted off the wait list!
I am planning on majoring in math/physics. Carnegie offers an honors program to graduate with a bachelor's and master's in math in just four years. Seniors at CMU get job offers in October of their senior year from prestigious companies and firms. Not to mention the social scene and campus at CMU fit me very well. I did visit McGill, but all I saw was the campus (which was massive); I didn't get a feel for the quality of the math dept. or the social climate. Of course, the biggest advantage of McGill is the price. It's heads and shoulders below CMU, which offered me little in the way of financial aid or scholarships (still in review).

I need some quick advice! Is McGill good/cheap enough for me to forget CMU, a comfortable fit and a great school, in a good city?

If there's ambiguity, I meant to say the PRICE is heads and shoulders lower at McGill... not the schools themselves

Congrats for getting off the wait-list!
I visited CMU when I was applying to schools, and I can tell you the two schools are very different! The biggest difference being the city they're in... Pittsburgh can't beat Montreal in a long shot! The city (Montreal) has amazing opportunities, and you'll never be bored! Academic wise I would say both are very similiar- but the advantage to McGill's academic programs are that if you're looking for international opportunities I'd say it beats CMU (McGill is one of the most recognized institutions worldwide)... plus the price, of course!
I actually have a friend graduating from Math and Stats this year- he's going to Columbia for grad... you'll have lots of opportunities!
G'luck on your decision!

I JUST made my deposit to McGill over CMU.. join me!! i'm goin for engineering
Mcgill 2010!!!

Justatest
My son is not in engineering-he is in Humanities-Faculty of Arts.
But I have to tell you that both he and we, his parents, are so very pleased with McGill.
We have visited him and met his friends and his friends are so intelligent, hard-working, poised, funny. They are in all different concentrations-Music, Art, Humanities, Engineering, Nursing, Teaching-you name it.
It is a good school.
Good luck to you but remember just one little thing-Bring a heavy and warm coat and gloves, hat and scarf-it gets a bit cold up there!

thanks for the advise, I'll be sure to
