Any clarity @pjimin ?
@Happy4u I am giving myself a few days to think it over, but I am pretty certain that I will choose McGill I visited the campus and toured Montreal last week, and it was great!!
@pjimin - I am glad you got to see McGill and Montreal in person. Have you visited the admitted students Facebook pages? The diversity at McGill is unparalleled. Students are coming from all over the world, many have lived in multiple countries and speak multiple languages. At US colleges, diversity is crafted by the Admissions team (not a criticism, just the nature of the beast). I think this is what may have tipped the scales for my daughter, who will be starting McGill this fall. She felt she would finish McGill with a more global perspective and a more unique experience, in addition to the excellent academics. You have stellar options - good luck!
OP: Are you considering graduate school ?
Do you want to work in the US or in Canada after finishing your undergraduate studies ?
I would echo the comments of @Happy4u. My U0 (a U1 in a few days!) has met kids from all over the world. His friend group includes kids from 4 continents (maybe 5). And this is just part of what naturally happens…it wasn’t forced or crafted. His world view has grown so much…I feel like I need to pay more attention to some world events just to keep up with him. A year ago, I would have said his world view was too small…hardly beyond Massachusetts in many ways.
Today he texted me to say how much he was going to miss Upper Rez and Montreal this summer. He’s excited to have no schoolwork for a few months…and a little home cooking. But he said the university and the city have just come to feel like home to him. As a parent, part of me is sad…but a larger part of me is thrilled. He is happy at a great school in a fantastic city and he is clearly on his way to adulthood.
I committed to McGill a few days ago! I am really excited
@Happy4u yes, I joined the McGill Facebook group, and compared with all of the other university Facebook groups I was in, McGill seems by far the most international, which is awesome. I also signed up for the Buddy Program for international students, so I am excited about that as well!
@Publisher yes, I think I would like to go to graduate school. I don’t really have much preference as to what country I go to graduate school in or what country I work in afterwards. I think the U.K. could be fun! I had dreamt of doing undergrad in the U.K. earlier in high school, actually, but it seemed like the finances wouldn’t work out, so I didn’t bother applying and just decided to do grad school there if I still wanted to
@Publisher , why do you ask OP about grad school and country of employment? Would love more info because my DS is considering McGill, but I do wonder about employment opportunities in the US with a McGill degree, and/or US grad school acceptances with the same (grad school is a possibility not an absolute). Thanks!
@TS0104 Graduate and professional schools are fully aware of McGill’s status and gaining entry would not be an issue. Employers interview on campus and multinational companies would forward the application to the relevant American division if that was what the student wished. Also never rule out the possibility of working in Canada if the opportunity arose.
My son, an American, graduated from desautels and had a job lined up in New York City 3 months before graduation.
@TSO104: My question to the OP regarding desired country of employment was to determine if OP, a US citizen, wanted to work in Canada. If OP prefers to work in Canada after graduation, then McGill is the best option. Canada is very accommodating to foreigners/non-Canadian citizens who earn degrees in Canada with respect to getting work permits/“green card” status.
With respect to your son, a US citizen presumably, who wants to return to the US to work after graduating from McGill, it might depend upon the industry as to any additional requirements, but usually it is an easy transition.
With respect to attending graduate school in the US with an undergraduate degree from McGill, there should be no barriers.
