The average GPA for the comm school (around 3.4-3.5) is the highest amongst all the schools in UVA. I saw the data somewhere online a while ago.

65% isnt bad at all. I think I can manage to obtain over a 3.5. Im going to be taking stat 212, econ 301, econ 303, and comm 201 next semester. Are any of those classes excessively hard?

You probably won't be able to get into econ 303 as a first-year and the material in comm 201 can be tricky.

O_O Stat and two 300 level econs... Good luck. You'll need it. And yes, comm 201 is hard. You're taking four hard classes that I would personally spread out over two semester.

yeah, id spread those classes out. Alot of people took comm201 and econ301 at the same time, but them adding stat just makes it awful. Have you got comm180 already?

Firstly, I'm not a first-year. I am a transfer student and enrolling as a 3rd year so getting the econ classes wont be tough.

You guys have gotten me extremely worried! I don;t have much play room if I want to major in economics as a back-up. I havent taken comm 180 yet, no.

How about this schedule: comm 180, comm 201, econ 301, and stat 212 ?

still tough schedule. Comm180 isnt that tough, but econ301 comm201 and stat212 are rough classes. I know a guy who applied to the comm school and got in without having any grades in comm classes. He was an econ major and then decided his 2nd semester 2nd year that he would try for comm. He was enrolled in 201 and 180 2nd semester, but already had grades in econ 311 (like 301) and stat 212. Bottom like was that he didnt have all the prereqs but had good grades in his econ classes and got in. All of this was on the condiiton that he take comm202 in the summer though.

wishiwere - i could hug you right now!

I just talked to them and they said that they let ppl in without all the prereqs met, if you say youll meet them before you enroll in ICE!!!

That might have just saved me from a horrible first semester at uva. I still am considering doing the original smester tho - it cant be but SO tough!

what classes would be good for a first year palnning on applying to mcintire ?

Generally the earlier you finish the pre-requisites for the comm school, the better it is for you. In my opinion, taking a variety of them is a good idea (e.g. comm, math, stat, foreign language) so you're mixing up your schedule for the semester.

ercmilla, are you staying in uva for an extra year then?

I took Applied Calc last summer at NVCC so I have credit for Math 121. I will be taking Stat 212 this semester. Will it hurt my McIntire Application if I don't take an additional math class?

Thanks!

Thats all you need. As long as you take the right reqs for math dont really worry. Stat 212 is a killer so you have got to be careful.

That's the minimum you would need, but taking more math/econ classes would definitely help your chances if you do well in them. Stat 212 is not so bad - I personally think it's not difficult.

It definitely isnt that bad, but it is a class where many people can slip up, especially if they are with a bad teacher (which UVa seems to have alot of in the Stat department). I found stat to be harder than math 131 and 132.

Ya, you need to pay attention to the professor/TA teaching stat 212. Some of them are terrible while others are better. I can't believe you found math 132 easier?! As a math major, I am shocked. For me, there's just so much material to cover in math 132 that stat 212 comes nothing even close.

haha I think it was just that I was able to grasp the concepts better. I stopped going to stat, so I basically self-taught myself the thing. I think I gave up on stat at some point in the middle of the semester so thats the reason. By no means was calc easy, I went to every class/discussion did every hw assignment but the application part was just better in calc.
