My daughter is DA to Kelley. She has heard a lot from former students. She is interested in applying for the KLLC, but to be frank I am concerned about the McNutt reputation. She is not going greek, size two, slutty or a heavy partier. She is a fun loving person, but also is a good student and a good kid. Her brother and others (former Kelley grads) suggested the KLLC and the proximity to the business but I am very concerned about her fitting in in this environment. They also have worried about that aspect.

They are all from before the KLLC existed and I am wondering if that has helped at all. What's the real deal?

My daughter had a very good experience as a DA freshman last year living in the KLLC in McNutt. She is also a serious and academic type of person. I think the KLLC was comprised of nearly two whole dorms, --Crone & Bryan. The feedback is that it’s very helpful to live with many of the same people who are also in your classes. Some of the classes are weed-out classes and quite difficult. The atmosphere was competetive and collaborative at the same time. Location is very convenient to Business School and there’s a recently remodeled cafeteria/store & center area in McNutt. Also there are business classes and sections offered in McNutt which is very handy. Your daughter will find many other hard working but fun students to get to know. About half of the students are DA and the other half are trying to get into Kelley. Study groups are very helpful and when many take the same classes, the floors are quiet with intense studying before an exam. Some floors will be more social than others, but there will always be like-minded people for your daughter across various floors. The KLLC is an excellent choice for a business freshman for making friends and connections at a large university. Some kids who partied too hard their freshman year did not get into Kelley.

Also, I heard that about half of Kelley Direct Admits are from out of state. I’m not sure if this is accurate, or how many are from neighboring Illinois, but this makes the KLLC less insular also.

My D was in the inaugural class of KLLC two years ago. Her experience was much as Marmala described. She made very good friends whom she went on to live with in a rented house sophomore year, and this year they are doing iCore together and bonding even more. There are certainly plenty of parties, but for the most part it seemed the KLLC kids kept it in balance (or they flunked out). My D is from California, and her best KLLC friends were from Colorado, Texas and New York so the OOS comment is also accurate.

The KLLC is definitely worth it. It’s not like the other buildings of McNutt. I’d highly recommend it, and yeah there are the partying types but the benefits are worth it.

Right now the KLLC is pretty much just freshman. There are a few sophomores, but like one or two per floor. There is $100 per year additional cost over what it is to live in McNutt.

A few years back, when they were going to build upperclassmen apartments across the street from McNutt, they planned on having a section of those be an extension of the KLLC for non-freshman. Obviously that didn’t happen, but some people have been saying there will be a section of The Union Street Aparments that is part of the KLLC next year.
