Me @ Georgia Institute of Technology (w/New SATs)

I would like to know what you guys think my chances are at this college. I put it as my #1 choice for Computer Science College in the state of GA. It can only be in the state of GA, as I need the HOPE Scholarship. (Income is paid by SSI, we are poor, I live with my Grandfather. My Grandfather came here from Thailand (Vietnam Conflict), I was born in the U.S.)

My Stats:
- Top 10% of 410 Seniors. About in top 40 students.
- All A's from Freshman -> Current
-Transcripts States GPA as about 96 GPA. (Should be higher as changing schools twice screwed up my Courses and Grades...)
- 2 "Quest" (Honors/Gifted) Classes - Biology (11th Grade, 96 avg.) and Pre-Calculus (12th Grade, currently 97 avg.) Each Honors/Gifted/AP Class adds .5 to GPA, total +.06? to GPA. (4.0 Scale)
- No Advanced Placement classes, (I was earlier advised against it... and it was too late that I found that AP classes were a plus to admissions.)
- No Extracurricular - Again, I live with my Grandfather (almost 70 yrs. old), with 3 siblings. With school and taking care of them, I've no time. I'm trying to fit this into the Essay part, but the Essay topic is: "Describe a personal experience that gave you the feeling of greatest achievement or satisfaction because of the challenges you met."
- SAT Scores, current highest at: 1170 (520 Verbal, 650 Math) - Waiting on Oct. 9th Scores...
- No SAT II Scores
- I'm Asian, and being a minority is a plus... but a past college visit shows they have a lot... maybe they don't need anymore?

What do you guys think? Should I make it? I am REALLY in need of going here. I expect to get a job after college with making +$60,000-75,000 within 4 years after graduation, so that's why I have high expectations to go there. Thanks!

So what is the new SAT score?

Umm my SAT score is updated in the first post, but...

Verbal: 500, it dropped 20 - 520 is the highest.
Math: 650, it increased 50 - 650 is my highest.

Your SAT's are really low for Tech. You might want to take the ACT's and see if those scores would be better. Remember you are competing with a large amout of really bright Georgia students, who also need the HOPE. I also noticed that your highest Math course was Pre-Cal; Tech will be looking for a much higher level of Math.

Have you looked into Kennesaw,Georgia Southern, or Valdosta State?

pokey318, that was a really discomforting post, but at least I know what to expect... My SATs aren't that low - GA Tech says 1150 at least to be competitive. Tech will be looking for higher level of Math? Well, is this the case if I'm going for the College of Computing, where they only go up to Calculus III? I WILL NOT settle for anything less than GA Tech. I have not looked at, and WILL NOT look at Kennesaw, GA Southern, or Valdosta. Those are all average schools. I am seriously above average at my school, why should I have to but pointed out to go to a low class college? I'm top 10% rank at my H.S., and being suggested to a couple of low-class colleges. I'm sad to that... it makes me feel like I haven't done enough. But... As a last resort I will go to UGA/Southern Polytechnic and transferring to GA Tech later.

I'm sorry but I don't see how one could get a full scholarship with 1170 SATs. Why are you so down on UGA?

Sorry if I upset you. Last I saw in the college books was that the average SAT at GT was 1250-1430. That puts you in the bottom 25% with your SAT score. Your GPA and class rank are good, but with no EC or AP courses you really are going to have to show them what makes you a great asset to their school. Don't forget, that UGA doesn't even look at a student with lover than a 1260 on the SAT's during the first round. Many of these student do get in in April though. I would suggest you talk to your GC at school and see what they have to say. Maybe they have more information that applies to you.

I would like to see you apply to several schools in Georgia so that you can attend college next year. You never know what each school is looking for in a student, and maybe you are what GT is looking for.

I just can't go to any other school! You guys do understand that GA Tech is the #1 Engineering school in the South-east right? I HAVE to go here, even if I'm going for Computer Science and not Engineering. They have a high reputation and I will need it. UGA doesn't even look at those lower than 1260 on first round? How do you all of that? And I feel like my future just got screwed over, now that the majority says I have bad chance there... I know I have to apply to other colleges in case I don't get to GA Tech, but I CAN'T not go to GA Tech! I won't even get a car if I don't go to GA Tech. And for scholarship, don't worry. With a low income family, I'm sure HOPE scholarship and Pell Grant will cover most of it.

Also... my Guidance Counselor is PURE CRAP. They are new this year, and just had a baby. We are just now catching up with 'Senior Evaluations' to see if students are on track. AND THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE IN SEPTEMBER... That's why I'm here. And signs definitely don't look good for me...

And UGA has a poor Computer Science program. GA Tech makes them look sorry. Everywhere you go find a job down in the Southeast, they say, are you from GA Tech?

py7133, try your best to get in, but that mentality will only hurt if you end up not getting in. Stop saying you cannot not go there. You could always go to UGA or Kennesaw State or Southern Polytechnic or someplace like that and transfer after one year if things end up not working out.

Yes, I understand neobez. But being an Asian is hard. You're raised in a low-income family. You have to make it to the top so you can help around your family. It's not like being American where it doesn't matter and you can just make enough for yourself. I KNOW for a fact I can get a mediocre job in the future where I can at least pay for an apartment and video games and food to eat. That's all the x letter word I'll ever need.

Dude I know, I'm asian too. There's so much in terms of expectations surrounding me. . .but I'm telling you, you can make it to GA Tech. But just know it might not be immediately. You can certainly transfer in if it doesn't work out at first (though I hope it does). So don't feel down if you don't get in. If it doesn't work out, you just have to give it all you've got to make the transfer.

No, it's more than just transferring. I won't be allowed a car if I don't make it my first year to GA Tech... and transferring is even more difficult than just going there first. My expectations are much higher than this... I'm angry with myself for not getting there... I swear I thought I would break 1200. I did Princeton Review's practice tests four times, came out with 640 math (which I broke at 650), and 580 verbal... But then, the verbal (reading comprehension) sections were SO BORING...

actually, you really should look at georgia southern. Their engineering program is linked with Ga Tech, and if you graduate from southern with an engineering degree your diploma will say ga tech graduate. Its really cool, and I'd imagine ga southern's classes would be more relieving than tech's. You should really look into that. Plus Southern's whole technology department is growing very rapidly.

No. I'm not going into Engineering. I'm all about Computer Science - Software Engineering, which means writing code for software, C/C++, Java, VB, etc. Get it? I'm not going to Southern Tech... I CAN'T... and it's so far away from home too. I want to be away from home, but not THAT far. Where I live is like an hour from GA Tech. And GA Tech is EXACTLY where I want to go. I could care less for the small dorm rooms. My bed room is LIKE a dorm room without a refridgerator and a sofa. I couldn't care less about a TV... even though I'm sure I could get one. I hope this isn't all the comments I'll get for this! I want more... because so far its not looking so bright.

I'll tell you the truth, you look grim towards being accepted into Georgia tech.

Asians do not get an advantage usually, they are not counted towards under-represented minorities AKA you are pretyt much in same competative pool as whites.

Being in Pre-Calc as a 12th grader is a disadvantage in most schools, alot of schools expect juniors to be Calculus, in my school it was as a Sophomore. Also the SAT test is alittle bit too low. a 1400+ would be competative

Anthony, is that from your perspective, or is this for truth? Because from what I know, very VERY few students here are Juniors in Calculus. They only have Pre-Calculus, then Quest (Honors) Pre-Calculus, then AP Calculus. No in-betweens. And yes, my SAT is so crap... but from what I know, GA Tech states that 1150 is competitive enough. I hope you guys are all going to schools like GA Tech and know this for a fact that I'm pretty much not getting in.

This might not be constructive but concerning going to college, being asian is not a minority that will help. Georgia Tech is ranked highly as an engineering university and your low SAT scores coupled with being Asian does not look good for your chances. In my opinion, your best chance is to describe in your essay your personal situation. If you have a good enough essay you might make it. When I say good I mean Nobel Prize winning good.

From what I have learned, they vary alot from place to place. I know of some HS's that have Calculus at an expected level for seniors, yet others vary alot. Also depends on private or public and many other factors.

However I would still apply, because I think it will not be a waste of your application fee :)

Alright here's from GA Tech's message boards, by Danny Easley...

There is no minimum GPA requirement for admission to Georgia Tech. We like to see at least a 3.00 high school GPA to be competitive for admission. The middle 50% of this year’s incoming freshman class had a 3.72 high school GPA.

There are no minimum scores for admission to Georgia Tech. We usually like to see at least an 1100 to be competitive for admission. The middle 50% of this year's incoming freshman class scored between a 1260-1400.

Do I not qualify to being competitive? Of course I am applying. It's my first choice, though I am going to spend some time thinking about the essay part before completing the application. And the essay being Nobel Peace Prize... that's insane... I barely write anything! How do I get help about that?

I didn't want to discourage you. I recommend that you come up with something good and give it to an english teacher. Ask her if you could talk to her while she checks so you tell her the full meaning for what you want to say.

One problem that I had that you probably have. Video Games. Stop playing them so you can work on more important things.
