How does the meal plan at neu work? If i were to get the 19 meal plan, how do they determine what 1 meal consists of? is everything place on campus that serves food serve it in the form of a pre-set meal or how does it work? and is it 19 meals per week, that would equate out to 2.7 meals a day, is that really enough?

and how do you buy other things at neu, completely out of pocket or do the meal points somehow work with other goods?

You get one point for each meal. Breakfast lunch and dinner each count as one point. You can use meal points only at the dinning halls plus Rebecca Café (burgers, chicken fingers, sandwiches, etc where one meal point gets you (for example) a burger, fries and a drink). You also get dinning dollars ($165 on the 15 meal plan) that you can use at a number of other dining options (food trucks, local fast food, etc). Unused meals can be used at Outtakes for grocery items but the exchange rate is not favorable at all. My son has the 15 meal plan for his first semester and struggles to use 10 meal per week. Unless you are very set on eating 3 scheduled meals a day, I would get only the 10 or 15 meal plan the first semester. After the first week of the semester, you can choose to get a higher meal plan but you can not chose a smaller plan. The food at Northeastern is good but there are so many other options that it is more fun to dine elsewhere sometimes. plus the dining hall food gets old pretty fast.
Hope this helps.

Yeah that helps a lot, thank you!

Get the 10 meal plan and use the money you save to budget buying meals elsewhere. The dining hall food is very good for colleges, but you will get sick of it quick if you eat it every meal. The 10 meal plan also includes more dining dollars.

My first semester I decided to try a compromise and got the 15 meal plan. Next semester I got 10 and it was plenty. I hardly knew anyone with the 19. That was just too much food. I usually ate 1-2 meals in the dining hall and used my dining dollars to get bagels/peanut butter for breakfast and stuff like mac & cheese or ramen for when I didn’t feel like going to the dining hall. Also, Outtakes is great because you can use one meal swipe and get a lot of food - usually enough for 2 meals + snacks for me.

It sounds like the 10 is a solid bet, I didnt know you received have dining dollars on top of the 10 meals them self which is why I was worried. And, I hear that buffet style dining place on campus is where to go regardless so I think 10 should do me just fine.

I wouldn’t say the dining halls are the place to go at all. It isn’t bad but you will be happy to not go there when you go elsewhere, and there’s plenty of options. There’s good mexican places if you’re close to the fens and rebeccas/chicken lous/qdoba are all common options for all, especially those who live closer to International Village (Honors).
