question for current students: meal plan

What meal plan did most people get? I am thinking of going for the 15 but I have lessons monday wednesday thursday on lunchtimes so I might not need that much. What did you guys do? Regret choice?

This was covered in the orientation. Most people said they chose the 10 meal plan because it gave them more flexibility. A couple of the orientation leaders said they eat around 12 meals per week and then use their Husky dollars for other things. You can still buy more than 10 meals, you just use dollars instead of meal tickets. If you don’t use the meals, they do not carry over to the next week, but the dollars do carry over.

My D started off with the 15 plan and then dropped to the 10 plan second semester…she used her Huskie dollars to supplement as well as ate oatmeal/coffee in her room in the AM…

According to the accepted student portal, you can change your mealplan online starting Aug. 8.

My son used the 15 meal plan and also used up his guest passes. Some weeks he didn’t use them all and some he needed more.

If you are going to stay on campus most of the time you would need the 15 just to cover two meals a day.

It really depends on whether you like a variety of places to eat or are happy to eat most of your meals in the dining hall. They are putting several new restaurants in the Curry Student Center this summer (similar to a food court) and these as well as several other restaurant options around campus (including the husky food truck) take dining dollars, but not meal swipes. The only restaurant on campus that does take meal swipes is Rebecca’s Cafe.

Depends. If you’re happy grabbing meals in your dorm fridge/Panera/ABP/Chicken Lou’s/Boloco/Temptations/Curry food court/etc you are likely to save money over the averaged out cost of the meal plan. And get more variety

Really, it entirely depends on the person. My freshman year I had a fifteen meal plan, and basically never used all of my meals, though I ate lunch and dinner out 2-5 times a week. My sophomore year, I lived in a suite with a kitchen (which I used very rarely), had a ten meal plan, ate out a little less, and had dinner at a friend’s place a night or two each week, and still never used all of my meals. I’m a pretty big guy, and have a pretty decent appetite too. Obviously you don’t want to waste meals, but the reality is that generally the food is better at restaurants, and that you do get a bit sick of cafeteria food after awhile.

On top of all that, college will probably change your eating habits completely, and that depends a lot on the person.

My son started with 15 meals and dropped to 10 the second semester, and there were a few weeks when he didn’t even use all 10. Breakfast was a granola bar or two in his room. He rarely ate off campus, though he ate dinner at Curry every Friday. I honestly don’t know what he subsisted on second semester, since he didn’t spend more than $10/week in dining dollars, but he is not a big eater.
