Meal Plans & dining @ options Rose Hill

Any feedback on the various options is appreciated. How many dining halls are available? do the all accept the "meal plan" or is flex money needed?

Probably looking at the 14 meals per week & $250 spending

or

10 meals per week and $350 spending

Do any off campus business's accept the fordham flex money?

They will send information to you later on. Trust me on that. Several options available and they are always reviewing it and trying to improve convenience and quality. Its not nearly as bad as Princeton Review says…which is based on very old information.

One main dining room, but several cafes and sandwich outlets and one full service restaurant (Dagger John’s…named after Archbishop John “Dagger” Hughes, Fordham’s founder. No…he didnt stab anyone! LOL)

Plus lots of convenience stores and a good pizza joint right off campus. Lots of kids also use chinese take out service. And then there is Arthur Ave for outstanding Italian food. Plus food markets in the area for snacks…and upperclassmen have apartments with kitchens on campus, so they buy their groceries there. Its all good.

You can go with one meal per day, two meals a day, three meals a day. And some flex money.

Is fordham flex money accepted at the pizzerias and stores on Arthur Ave? or do you need cash above & beyond meal plan?

thanks

as far as I know, the answer is a clear no. So you need spending money for the MetroNorth into Manhattan (or RamVan to Lincoln Center…unless you have a class there and then its free), eating out, buying snacks off campus, entertainment off campus, travel. While some kids at Fordham come from a seemingly bottomless pit of money from their uber wealthy parents, the vast majority of kids are on student loans, limited budget and are very careful with their money. Most go to museums on Wednesdays or the Zoo when its free. Most go into Manhattan and eat really cheap…including hot dogs from vendors. Most kids dress down (except for events, dances etc), so its not an oppressive place for kids with low income. But yes, its an expensive city and overall its something you have to plan for and budget. I strongly recommend you get a job now set up for the summer and work your rear end off and save EVERY dime. The more you earn, the more you have.

hi sovereigndebt- do you know if Arthur Avenue area is safe… like in evening at dinnertime and the other nearby places to go to eat? Is there week-end night life on campus or do the kids go to nearby house parties? I’m worried about the surrounding area
thanks

Brocha - My S is currently a senior at Rose Hill. He and his friends go to Arthur Avenue all the time and I have walked over there to eat with him many times as well. At this point he has many friends who live off campus and he is comfortable walking to/from their apartments as well. The area is safe, but like any urban area it would be a bad idea to walk around alone and drunk at 2AM or something. The area surrounding Fordham offers a lot (restaurants, shopping) but you have to be smart.

My D is a freshman and totally new to New York (we are from Arizona very rural part). She loves going to Arthur Ave for fun at night, granted she never goes alone and I don’t think she is an angel but does act responsibly. She also has a best friend who has a shared apartment across the street off campus and they regularly hang out there. She tells me about incidents in the area where people are drunk and walking alone so definitly stays in a group. She is busy at night on campus with several clubs she is involved in and the newspaper. I really don’t feel it is any “less” safe than any other big city, if anything the closed campus makes it safer. Here at the University of Arizona it is not a closed campus and the library is homeless central.

agree with the above comments. I’ve personally come back from Arthur Ave at night…late…after 1100pm. in a group and never been bothered. But like all cities, its never a good idea to walk alone at night, drunk or sober. There are many restaurants on Arthur Ave and the adjacent streets. Those restaurants depend on Fordham faithful, tourists and other city residents for their business.

As an aside, many Fordham students embrace the Bronx. Its eclectic and interesting. Many work in the Bronx in internships, most of which are designed to help the less fortunate or in educational endeavors. It can be highly rewarding for the spirit and uplifting. Fordham is part of the Bronx. You may be very surprised how involved Fordham is in the immediate community.

USC is in South Central LA. Duke is in Durham, which has some rough areas. UChicago is in Southside Chicago. BU/BC/Northeastern are in Boston and it has areas which are not always the best. All sorts of examples. In fact, most Jesuit colleges are inner city locations. Its part of the transformational experience you will have.

Also, there are some fun grocery stores and other shops in the same area. Shopowners love Fordham students. Its their business!

Don’t fear it. Embrace it. :->
