I’m almost positive that I want to major in Mech E, but i also LOVE math. (I’ts either ME or physics.) Yes, I know that a lot of math is required in the ME course plan, but I’d like to know it all. I’m considering a double major in ME and Math. It seems like it would be a good idea since many math courses required for the major are already in the ME requirements. Also, are there any benefits to having a double major in Mech E and Math? Will it increase my chances in getting a job?
I think a double major in ME and Mathematics would make for a great intellectual experience, regardless of what professional doors it may open. If you enjoy Mathematics, go for it.
But to answer your question about job prospects, if you wish to work in the Engineering domain, the Mathematics degree will probably not enhance employment opportunities. However, if you wish to work in Finance, the Mathematics degree could come in handy.
The idea of a double degree or major is nice in in theory but if it takes you an extra year of college it is not very practical. A minor would be a better choice. Given your declared interests, you might want to look into an Applied Physics or Engineering Physics program where you sort of get a double major as part of the program.
