Mechanical engineering degree or communications/journalism degree?

I am stuck between these two majors. I really love sports and could spend my whole life studying statistics and covering sports, but I am afraid that with the job market I am going to end up working at Burger King or some other place. I am currently a Mechanical Engineering major and my gpa is about 3.3, but I spend so much time studying and I am slowly starting not to enjoy the math. Is finding a job in sports journalism that difficult? I also plan to go to graduate school after no matter what for engineering or sports journalism.

I’m still only in high school but my friends and I are all in this same situation! Would love to hear some input on this topic.

So are you majoring in engineering to decrease the likelihood of working at Burger King?

I think you should ask yourself whether or not you’ll be able to enjoy working as an engineer, at least enough to not pull your hair out. Do you think you’ll enjoy it? How much? Why?

Where are you in the math sequence? It gets to be a lot less down the road and thats when you actually use it. The majority of the time I use algebra and then do an Integral here or a DiffEq there. So just stick through it and KEEP THIS OPTION OPEN. Most people cant keep a 3.3 in engineering, it does get rough at times, but thats why we make more than Burger king…

Journalism jobs in general are expected to be difficult to find.

Sports journalism/commentator jobs pay a surprisingly small amount of money, even if you do get the job. Unfortunate but true.
Do you really want to do mechanical engineering, or is that just your safety choice? Given that you have no real reason for going to grad school, I assume the latter is true. If you want a well-paying job that involves studying a ton of statistics, you could go into actuarial science and do risk analysis for businesses.

Note that actuarial jobs can be prepared for through an applied math or statistics major with appropriate electives if there is no specific actuarial science major at your school.
