Why can't we use mechanical pencils anymore? I hate wooden ones!

I hope it isn't that someone tried to shove some sort of cheating materials down the lead tube... That's just sad...

I agree! I was appalled when my proctor said no more mechanical pencils. I only brought mechanical pencils! I had to use the crappy ones supplied by collegeboad! They had such crappy erasers, if my score is affected by those erasers... man, CB is going to get a piece of my mind (aside from the part they yanked out this morning).

was this change mentioned anywhere on the website?

I used mechanical pencil for the essay (the lead is finer and thus easier to read and faster to write), but for the mulitple choice, I used wooden ones (bigger surface area constitutes to less time bubbling).

you were allowed to use a mechanical pencil? my proctor wouldnt let me and cited a new collegeboard rule... interesting

I at least had a nice big eraser pencil with me.

Still, I prefer 0.9mm lead to the bigger wooden pencils for bubbling. It's more consistent.

right on the test, at the top it said "do not use a mechanical pencil"... my guess is that people were using ones that werent #2 because its not always clear on the pencils and so they were having trouble scoring. i had to use those stupid white CB pencils too, and im suing if those damn erasers changed my score...

Idiots... When you buy the lead replacements they have the grade (or whatever it's called) on the package.

Not that you can find non-#2 lead anywhere but art stores anymore...

So far, my kids have ONLY used mechanical pencils for all their standardized testing. Neither have had problems & my S was a NMF, so I don't think the mechanical pencil hurt his scores. My D is a HS junior & still plans to use her mechanical pencil & has not been advised that there will be any problem with her doing so.

I used a mech. pencil on the entire test, what's up!

nnnnnnnnnnnnooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ***???? I CANNOT USE REGULAR PENCILS PERIOD...!!!!!!!! I HATE REGULAR PENCILS(SRY PENCILS) THEY AGRIVATE ME! tell me a good exscuse of getting me outta use regular pencils b/c i have psat wednesday

umm yeah you're stuck my proctor sneezed on mine and took it .....let's not discuss that moment of misery further

*. my proctor did not even mention that to us. and i had TWO proctors. oh wow, call it fate that i decided to use wooden pencils except when writing in my info which would probably mess things up lol, but my friend used mechanical pencils on hers! *...

I used mechanical pencils on mines. my proctor did not mention anything. I saw about 3 guys using mechanical pencils

it said on the website, registration and admission ticket that no mechanical pencis are allowed. I'm pretty sure it was the same when I took it in may (and on my PSAT last year). I think it really depends on your procter.

Both my kids have taken SAT & PSAT several times. My S has also taken the SAT II several times & 13 AP exams. He has NEVER been prevented from using his mechanical pencils, nor has my D. Neither of them have ever seen anyone who has been prevented from using their mechanical pencils either. Your proctors & schools administering these exams sound like they have different ideas though--I know it would really bug my kids not to use their mechanical pencils which are practically glued to their hands.

They haven't used wooden pencils since about 2nd grade or so. Our kids' HS ends up with LOTS of NMSFs every year (including my S & 15% of the graduating class last year), so it must be doing something right in administering the standardized tests.

i used mechanical for most of today, and noticed that i had 4 bubbles that had Gone THROUGH to the other side... I think it was cuz it waas sharp and i bubbled hard... thank GOD it erased, or it would have MEESSED up my scores

i think i saw that mine had made dents on the other side...gosh i really hope that didn't mess anything up. the thing is, i used a regular wooden pencil!

What would have happened had we used Mechanical pencils anyway? Would it have made a difference anyway?
