The school I'm going to doesn't offer a petroleum engineering degree. As such, I have to choose between mechanical and chemical. I want to work upstream, but I'm not sure which of those two offers me the best opportunity. Is chemical able to do both upstream and downstream? What about mechanical? Which offers the best opportunity in both?

I’d say your best chance to work upstream is mechanical, but you can certainly get ChemE jobs upstream. But MechE is more similar to PetE.

Most people don’t enjoy chemistry, but you may be different. Feel it out.
