Hey ccers,

Certainly this does not make up for a 3.0 GPA, but with competitive credentials, how favorable is it to have a med school professor write a rec for you? (esp. when applying to the med school he/she teaches at?

Depends in what capacity.

Certainly if you have a long standing relationship in which you performed research for the prof, that would likely stand out just a touch compared to a similarly worded letter from an undergrad prof.

If it's a family friend sort of thing, it'll be better than letters from other family friends (or say your family physician) but wouldn't be better than one from a prof who taught you.

Family friend letters should be out regardless. If it's from a professor who actually taught you or supervised your research, it might matter a little. The credential itself won't matter, but it might lead to a better letter.
