I was wondering if AP credits are acceptance or frowned upon for the math requirement. Also, will a 5 in Calc AB and a 4 or 5 on Statistics meet the requirements?

Thanks a lot!

If you use credit, supplement it with higher level courses.

I got a 5 on AB and I’m using that credit to skip Cal 1 and go to Cal 2 next semester.

So it would fulfill the req (for those schools that accept AP), but if you use it, try and prove that it wasn’t a fluke and that you actually know your stuff by taking higher level courses.

I would recommend taking at least one calc and stats class, if not two calc classes, while in undergrad. AP credit is a pain in the butt for a pre-med, don’t use it for any pre-reqs if you can help it.

I guess I will think about that when the time comes. The reason I am still hesitant to take it, but it should change when I find out where I will end up going, is that most schools have difficult math classes. For example, Cal Berkeley is a top engineering school and the calculus classes are really difficult. I think the non - engineer students have to take the same calc classes so the curve is definitely harder.

take the 16 series at Cal and you’ll avoid the Engineers and physical science majors, but will find all the premeds!

Some schools require at least one math class taken IN college. Make sure that the schools you are interested in applying to aren’t one of them. However, you can always satisfy the requirement with a statistics class.

here’s the deal with AP credit and applying to med schools:

your score AND the class you got credit for MUST appear on your transcript. if the class you got the credit for does NOT appear on your transcript, then you have to take the class. Also, this usually only works for math, english, and may be physics. i have yet to see a school that accepts chem or bio credit.

keep in mind that a couple schools (like 1-2) will not accept ANY AP credit regardless if the credited class appears on your transcript.

S was able to use AP credit for intro level bio and chem classes. He took additional upper level bio and chem classes to fulfill pre med requirements and actually ended up with a chem minor. His use of AP credits was not an obstacle in his med school admission.

^right. it will only work for chem/bio if you take additional upperdivs in those departments
