Medical School prerequisite courses

I’m a health science major on a preprofessional track for medical school and have a question about the prerequisite courses. Many require about a semester of calculus I and a semester of statistics. I passed my AP calculus AB exam with a 4 which allows me to get my MAC2311 credit. However, I want to apply to medical school in the future and was wondering, does replacing a math credit with an ap class rather than an actual college class hender medical school admissions (is it frowned upon)? Or should I just take MAC2311 this fall as a freshman anyway? Thank you!

Most if not all med schools take AP calc credit. Don’t take it again.

Most med schools will accept AP credit; however, many schools expect that AP credits be supplemented with an additional upper level class in the same department. (IOW, some schools will expect you to take another semester of math/calc.)

A score of 4 on your AP Calc AB exam suggests that you have not completely mastered Calc 1 since you can answer more than half of the questions incorrectly on the AP exam and still get a 4. If you plan to take more math or you are required to in order to fulfill your graduation requirements, you definitely need to retake Calc 1 to improve your mastery of the material.

The only other math I need to take for my major is a semester of statistics. I got As both semesters of my calculus class and understand the material well but just want to see opinions about AP courses in relation to medical school.

Your high school calc grades are irrelevant since different instructors grade very differently. You still have incomplete mastery of the material.

Yes, I know that…obviously I didn’t get a 5 so I need more calculus material. I’m just trying to get opinions not criticisms, thank you.

FYI, at least one of your in-state public med schools will not accept AP credits for Calc.

The medical schools I want to apply to in-state do accept AP credits, I’ve searched already.

@WayOutWestMom Sorry if I came off stand off-ish. I truly appreciate your opinion! I just want to make sure I make the right decisions on picking my courses and prerequisite courses for medical school.

I think you’re misunderstanding. Those med schools won’t let you apply your AP Credits to be your prereqs, but you can still use them to “move forward” to the next level.
