Hey, I applied and I am really interested in this program. I did a lot of research on it, but I want to hear from people to attend Steinhardt for this. How do you like the professors/courses/etc? What do you suggest? And what is the job outlook/salary for people who major in this?

search the forums, i’ve written long posts about MCC. (i’m graduating from MCC in May 2011).

Okay thanks. I did look through and it helped me a lot. Good luck on your graduation! And you’re double majoring in political science, right? How is that going for you? Is a double major a lot of work? And you can just declare it as soon as you enter NYU?

And another question. I know that you said you go to NYU for free because you have a parent work here, but do you know about Steinhardt giving any good merit scholarships. I know that NYU is HORRIBLE in giving any aid, but I also understand that Steinhardt has a very generous scholarship program with some community colleges. Do they have similar things for their current students?

Thanks

I actually dropped the double major in Politics and took up a minor in Gender Studies. I found that I wasn’t a good fit with the Politics department here and liked the Gender Studies department much better.

For that community college program, you have to apply to it. I’m not sure about aid for current students.

Oh okay. Glad that you picked a department you like.

Also, I like the major, but I really want to know what it’s like from someone who graduated from the program. Like, how is life after mcc? Is the salary enough to pay off the NYU debt? Do you keep in touch with any of the graduates?

THanks

That’s the thing. MCC isn’t a major where there’s one set path. It’s not like marketing or film or accounting. MCC majors end up doing a lot of things. They go to law school, into public relations, on to PhDs (like me), into film/television/marketing. If you’re thinking of going into a lot of debt for a communications degree, don’t do it. The economy isn’t stable enough to bank on the fact that an MCC degree will be lucrative enough to pay back mountains of debt.

We have alumni roundtables within the department, and alums have gone on to working at CBS, Google, BBDO, and other high-powered companies. BUT, they all got those jobs before the economy tanked and the media industry shrank. So, it’s a crapshoot.

Oh thank you so much for telling me this. You have been a big help throughout the whole transfer process. I got into MCC and I am planning to double major in Economics, but that would be $120,000 in debt. My parents said they can pay almost half, but since you put it that way, I guess I should have applied straight to CAS after all.

I think I would have a better shot to apply to CAS during the spring anyway. You chanced me before, but if I am able to maintain a 3.85 GPA, will I have a chance to transfer to NYU CAS. I’m also going to have a lot of leadership roles.

Thanks again!!

However, NYU was always my dream school and I will be able to do something I love (Media Comm) and do something that I like and will get me a job (Economics). Maybe I can turned Media Comm into a minor by internally transferring into CAS after a year. Would you say that’s a better idea? What is a good GPA to maintain to internally transfer into CAS? Or is it better just to reject NYU right now and apply straight for CAS in the spring?

Honestly, you could probably swing the double major. If you come to Steinhardt now, you’re stuck in Steinhardt for a year before you can transfer to CAS. That’s usually the case, but you can talk to someone at NYU about it to make sure. Don’t reject the offer if you really want to come to NYU. There are limited spaces in CAS Economics as it is, and you don’t know what could happen.

True true. It’s so funny because I was hoping for get in as a transfer to NYU since I was rejected last year as a high school senior. I thought I would be so happy when I would get in, but I’m even more stressed out now lol.

Were you able to declare Politics as a double major as soon as you entered NYU? Or how long did you have to wait? Whether I get into CAS or not, I still want to declare the Economics major as soon as possible. I plan to take an Economics course during my first semester at NYU and do really well in that. I want to let that Economics professor know about my interest in internally transferring into the CAS Economics program. Hopefully, it will work out.

So after doing a lot of thinking (for about a week!) about whether or not to transfer, I decided to stay at Baruch (at least for now) and apply for next spring or for next fall 2011. It’s just the whole financial situation. It’s not worth it to attend NYU for a min of $120,000 (and that’s if they count all my credits from college). I just have one more question. You said that there is little room in the Economics department, so I was thinking about just applying undecided because I really am still undecided. I might switch to math next year lol. So is it possible to apply for the undecided major in spring when I would be on my third semester at Baruch.

No, when you transfer, you MUST declare a major. It’s easy to switch majors within CAS, but you have to declare SOMETHING on the form.

okay sounds good. I guess I’ll just apply for a smaller major and then switch to Economics right away. It’s not like internally transferring or anything. Like at every college, once you get into that particular school, I guess all you have to do is fill out some form saying you want to switch majors and you’re good to go.

missamericanpie, im very new to this website, and im searching for the forums in which you wrote about mcc, but i cant find anything/ dont know how to use this! if you could give a link or help me out? i want to transfer to mcc sping 2011, so i want to read about it! im very worried about financial issues, knowing i wouldnt get aid or a huge scholarship… of course i can continue to find outside scholarships throughout the years, but i will be in a lot of debt for sure.

do you think graduating with the degree will pay off in the long run compared to going to umd for a marketing degree and probably half the price

Honestly? NYU isn’t worth huge piles of debt.

yeah, i mean i have a lot of friends that go there ( mainly sternies, so they all dont care about the loans) and i love the city and the feel of the school. thats why i wanted to know more about the program… can you help me find the posts in which you talked about the program a lot? how is the career center and do they really help you find a lot of nice internships at least?

im worried cause im starting to think its not worth the debt either, but i had my heart set on it…
so i wanna know the goods and the bads.
