Medical ethics?

I was hoping this would grab your attention.

I'm writing an essay for one of the summer programs that I'm applying to and in one of them I want to talk about my experiences interning at a local hospital. However, I don't know what the privacy laws (I live in Oregon, but I think the laws are about the same everywhere) allow me to say.
If I stick to vague descriptions such as "I saw an elderly woman on a ventilator," I'm not violating the privacy laws, am I?

In published books by MD's I've seen one initial used (like "S" if the guy's last name was Smith). Dunno if that helps. I think descriptions would be fine if you want to take that route.
