Medical School admission

Hi everyone, I really need some help and advice from you guys. I am currently a Freshman premed student and my gpa is not theat good, it’s only a 3.2 GPA. My first semester was not that good and this how my performance overall looked like:

1st SEMESTER: * Calculus 1 A-
* English 101 B+
*COMM. 101 B+
*CHEM 105 C+
*CHEM 105 lab B+
* BIO 101 (Dropped the class, W)
*BIO 101 lab (Dropped the class, W)

As you can see my first semester was horrible and I didn’t perform well, so my second semester began and is not going good as well, and this is how my current grade looks like:

2nd SEMESTER: *English 105 B
* CHEM 106 C
* CHEM 106 lab C
* AHS 220 B
*Psychology C+
*BIO 102 D- ( thinking of dropping the class, W)
*BIO 102 lab D+ ( thinking of dropping the class, W)

As you can see both of my 2 semester I did so poorly, and was so concerned and also wondering if having all these withdraws on my transcripts with poor grades affect my chances of getting into medical, and what can I do to improve my chances on getting to medical school. I know I am not a very smart student but I don’t want to give up, I still push myself and improve my mistakes, but I don’t how. I AM REALLY IN NEED OF HELP

And also as you can see, Biology is my weakest subject that I do so poorly in, which is shocking and embarrassing especially being a premed Student. Therefore I would appreciate so much and take consideration if anyone gave me advice on how I can master that class and perform well in it.

Thank you so much for anyone willing to share their advice to me

why don’t you head on over to the pre-med forum; many experienced voices there to lend opinions on medical school admissions.

Thanks Crankyoldman, but how do I do it, Am new on this web

You made it over! And you’ll get plenty of opinions.
So here’s mine: ask yourself, why are you doing poorly in these classes-and be honest with yourself. That’s the best place to start moving forward; see what’s happened, and what steps you can take to change things. You’re a second semester freshman; there is still time.

  1. Not everyone who wants to go to med school is cut out (academically) for it.

There’s no shame in that. Science may not be your strength. In life you need to play to your strengths, not your weaknesses.

  1. Think long & hard about why you are not doing well in your science classes.

Do you lack the necessary high school preparation? Do you have poor study habits? Do you just not “get” the material? Are you using all the available resources open to you? (Office hours, tutoring, alternate textbooks/YouTube videos/study guides, peer study groups) Do you have difficulty with the amount of reading? Memorization?

  1. Make an appt with the academic counseling center at your university. They can help assess where your deficits lie and offer your some help with study habits, The counseling center offers free tutoring as well.

My suggestion–for now, drop the pre-med intention and concentrate of learning how to be successful student in college. Once you’ve learned to do that, then and only then, you can consider if you want to get back on the pre-med treadmill. There is no single path to med school. Everyone who arrives in med school got there by a different road. Many students take the long way.

If you’re interested in medicine —there are whole array of OTHER health profession careers out there.

Many are far less competitive than medical school is.

Thank you so much for everyone who shared their opinion and gave me some advices, I really appreciate all your ideas and find them so helpful

Drop the bio class. Focus on your other classes - go to office hours, get a tutor, etc. Devote 3 hours to prep for each class period. Study in a quiet place in the library.
Aim for a B in chem and a B+/A- in AHS and Psych.

Stop thinking about pre-med for now. If that’s in the cards you’ll find a way later. For now, figure what you’re good at.

Perhaps consider taking summer classes at a community college near your home. I would recommend taking statistics and Economics in case those interest you.

Thank you so much MYOS1634 , that’s really a good advice and I will make sure I take it for consideration and try talk to my counselor as well and see what she has to say about it.

What was your strong points in HS? You should focus on what you are good at. Right now, CS or IT are really hot, if you are good at it, you should go for it. IMHO, you should take broad spectrum of classes and find that sweet spot. Medicine career is not for everyone. You will do fine if you find what interest you, search from your HS records may find some.
