Hello,
I’m currently a Biotechnology major and I’m premed (trying to go to medical school). But I want to change my major to something easier for my GPA to survive but I really don’t want to get a degree in something irrelevant. But I also know that a engineering technology major (biotech) is hard. So I need advice, should I change to an easy major for a higher GPA or stay biotech and have an OK GPA (3.5/3.6)???
Med schools want high GPA, high MCAT scores. If you can switch to a major that will satisfy the pre reqs of the med schools you are interested in, do so.
There is no easy way out for med school. You pick majors that you will be comfortable with and do well in it.
We need a little more info, what year are you in, if you changed would you be taking less challenging course, or are those already done? Engineering would probably have more math, maybe a course in modeling, thermodynamics etc. So if you’ve already taken any of those or differential equations, not sure how much that would help.
3.5 or 3.6 is solid for engineering, so if you enjoy the engr stuff, maybe you can still stay in it. If med school didn’t work out, a bme degree is more marketable than a bio or chem (which typically needs a Masters or Phd).
In general, if you have a cGpa of 3.7 and bcmp Gpa of 3.5/3.6 you are still competitive in md schools, below that, do schools. Mileage may vary based on your Mcat and med Ecs.
