I am a high school student and I am wanting to go to medical school after my undergrad. Will I have a higher chance of getting into medical school if I am Hispanic and the first person to attend medical school?
Those are two hooks but if your GPA and MCAT are low you will still not be admitted.
This is not a hook…<<< first person to attend medical school >>>
Hispanic may or may not be a hook. It depends on what Hispanic cultural group you represent and whether you have displayed an affiliation for service to that group. Mexican-Americans and Puerto Ricans are considered UiM at most medical schools. Other Hispanic cultural groups usually are not considered URMs, though each medical school makes it own determination for what it considered under-represented in medicine.
You’re in high school. First, you need to get into a college that will provide you with lots of support and a collaborative environment.
What’s your GPA? What AP classes have you taken or are you scheduled to take? Do you have a PSAT or Sat score yet?
Hispanic will help. First person in the family to attend med school means literally nothing.
But as others have said: Worry about getting into college first.
If you are good enough in Spanish, at the level of med school, you could apply for med schools in PR, which will give you a very good edge.
