Does a medical school give preference(or at least increases your chances) to students who graduated from their own university?. For instance, a University of South Florida graduate, applying for the University of South Florida Medical School(College of Medicine).

I know that in some cases, a med school will have a quota or ceiling for its own undergraduates, so it might work against you to be from the same undergraduate institution (unless of course you’re at the top of your class). But I suspect that each med school is different. Why don’t you ask?

You asked the same question in different form on four different threads, and it has already been answered.

Posts: 1,178 Most medical schools have an acceptance rate of somewhere between 3-10% of applicants. This doesn’t include the thousands of students who drop out of pre-med along the road. You might not get a preference at your home medical school, but you get the opportunity to build a relationship over four years, that’s where any preference is likely to come from.

I know, but I was wondering If I could get more feedback. The reason someone answered that, was because I asked a question within a thread with a different topic.

That is the answer that every current med student, M.D., adcom (prior or present) is going to give you on these forums. The question has been asked and answered numerous times with the same answer.

oh ok…I mean I didn’t know that.

That said, some med schools actually don’t take many of their own undergrads or make admission more difficult; it depends on the school.

Don’t pick a school hoping for a boost in med school admissions; that is a BIG mistake. Pick the school that is the best fit and where you think you will be happiest because those two things will contribute greatly to your academic success which is ultimately the most important thing.

thank you eadad!

yeah, I was also thinking it might work against me. I am planning to visit this week. I would definitely ask.:)

Creighton School of Medicine adcom have told me that they prefer their own undergrad students (Creighton University) and are given an advantage in their admissions process.
