Medical school with low GPA for other reasons

I am a recent graduate from University of Iowa. GO HAWKEYES! Up until recently I had not had any intention of going into the medical field so my GPA is nowhere near where it needs to be. 2.7... After years of research on my own I was able to start up a medical company. After talking to many investors and seniors in my field I realized I can really solidify my standings as CEO in this rough business field by going to medical school and putting my focus on research. The problem is launching my product is very time sensitive so I do not have years to go to post bacc schools or masters programs and then applying to medical school. Do you guys think I could get in if a medical school sees how serious I really am and that I want to go into further research. By no means am I saying medical school is easy and just a means for my gain I honestly feel I can further my education by learning everything that is taught and I am a deadly serious worker when it comes to my company.

I was also recently given a pretty substantial grant by the government recently to continue my work.

Any thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would maybe try posting this in the section for medical school/pre med on this forum, I think you might get some responses there!

From reading this post I say why not?! It totally depends on how revolutionary your product is! It might get your foot in the door. Nonetheless, I’m not sure you need medical school for your research as it may not be as focused as you may like? Maybe a PHD (as oppose to an MD) is a better choice?

but how do you guys think they’ll take the notion that someone only wants to go to their school for research? I would think they would take it well and think that if my product goes big it will reflect well on their institution

Do a PhD. Not an MD. Med schools won’t care about how much of a “hit” your product would be and how well it would “reflect on their institution.” They create practicing doctors, not pure researchers (I may be slightly off on this, hopefully someone will correct me).

How recent is recent? Do you have the necessary prereqs, by the way? Have you taken the MCAT? How is your science GPA? You may be a “deadly serious worker” when it comes to your company, but you haven’t shown that in your coursework, which will be a huge hit against you. How time sensitive is your product’s release? You do realize that med school is a lot harder than undergrad, and if you couldn’t excel in both your company and undergrad simultaneously, it will be nigh-impossible to do so in med school (a four-year commitment).

I think wanting to go to their school only for research will be a turn off. like TitoMorito said, med school are looking for applicants who are serious about working with patients, who are familiar with the daily works of doctors to know what they’re getting themselves into (easily 7+ years counting residency). one may complement patient care with research, but rarely for research alone. I agree with Tito that you’re more suited for a Ph.D program.

I would think that motivation would not get far with an application, interview, nor what it takes to get through med school for that matter. I am also conflicted by the idea of a low gpa because you had no intention to go to med school. Not sure why. How does that explain a low gpa?

Wouldn’t business, or maybe biomed engineering or something be better?

A possibility might be MD/PHD program. The emphasis is on the research. This might make a difference.
