Hi Everyone,
I am currently a sophomore in high school with a deep interest in medicine and science, hoping to get into a top 10 school on a path to be a surgeon. I feel like I have the pure raw numbers to get into these schools but I feel that my out of class achievement is falling short. I’ve recently entered a state of shock when I found out how late I was in preparing my application to make me a competitive candidate for these top tier schools. Upon my research, I came across the strategy of a Spike, where colleges are looking for highly specialized individuals to make a well rounded class. My current predicament is that I am stumped on what exactly would be my competitive spike. Besides some obvious extra curriculars for this field such as volunteering in a hospital or competing in the International Science and Engineering Fair what else would qualify as the selling point. Would conducting research under a local university proffesor, creating a National Science Honor Society chapter in my school give me the competitive edge, or getting a summer internship for medical research give me the competitive edge. I feel like I am running out of time even though in reality I am probably just over exaggerating, but I feel that I just need some reassurance. Thank you guys in advance.
