Medium and Small Safety/Match Schools for Advanced Math Student (Comp Sci too)

This analysis should substantiate his interest: https://ideas.repec.org/top/top.usecondept.html.

For the economics student, he may want to consider the following:

  1. Economics major programs typically have a core of introductory economics (one or two semesters), intermediate microeconomics, intermediate macroeconomics, econometrics. Beyond that, students take several upper level elective economics courses.
  2. The economics courses may have math and statistics prerequisites: a. Light math: only introductory statistics (non-calculus) required. b. Moderate math: single variable calculus and introductory statistics (may be calculus-based) required. c. High math: multivariable calculus and/or linear algebra and statistics (often calculus-based) required. Some colleges (e.g. Harvard) offer more than one option in math intensity for the intermediate economics courses.
  3. The main content differences between different economics departments will be in the area of math intensity and what kind of elective economics courses are offered. The types of elective economics courses offered can give an idea of what subareas are emphasized.

The “run out of courses” issue that your highly advanced math student may find at many LACs is less likely to be an issue for your economics student. However, different LAC economics departments may have different levels of math intensity and different kinds of elective economics courses.

@merc81 And it was a nice surprise to see UMD on the list.

@ucbalumnus Thank you, son #2 started college with the goal of grad school in behavioral economics and then he hit multi-variable calculus. He moved from C to B, moderate math. And is now working on PhD in I/O psych. I don’t see Econ twin going to grad school. He has been running a virtual business for a few years.

@Data10 do you think this data applies to double legacy from Yale?

Update: Son currently a junior. Enrolled in Diff Eq at CC. Will probalby take Linear Algebra next semester at CC and return to HS senior year to take AP Stats (if admit to Harvard would take Calc 3 Spring of senior year because he really wants to take Math 25).

GPA 4.0 Weighted 4.8 8 AP Classes, 3 or 4 next year

Rice and Brown are now question marks

Will need financial aid (situation complicated by Dad’s death in June), will contact schools directly next year after taxes.

He thinks he may want to be a quant and that his list needs more matches.
