Meeting Counselor

How do you guys meet your counselor? I go to a school of 2600 and my counselor isn't very friendly per se... I 'met him' while I had to take some correspondance tests but he seems to not even want to get involved with the student!! I wanted him to get to know me because I am a junior and will need college recs a year from now, but the question is how!!
Any advice?

I'd suggest finding small, but not minute, problems or questions that he could answer for you, setting up an appointment, and rolling eith it. I was lucky enough (although lucky isn't quite the right word) to have major problems with my math junior year (the teacher and the class), so I had a ready-made excuse to frequently visit my counselor and catch up, just to make sure she remembered me. It was especially helpful since she was my third counselor in as many years, but luckily, she'll be the one writing my recommendations. I hope you won't have a problem similar to mine, but find something that could be fixed or brought to his attention and follow up on it. You might be surprised at how much of his "not very friendly" attitude is due to having a lot on his plate.

I love my guidance counselor. I've had him since sixth grade, since he was transferred to the high school my freshman year. He's slow in everything he does, and I usually wait outside his office during all of study hall - and get nowhere. But he's really friendly and recently won some kind humanitarian award of the year or something.

Plus, I have scheduling problems every year, so he is forced to see me.

My highschool is huge too and the counselors are awful. Set up a meeting to talk about your college plans, I'm sure you have questions or want some advice. Force him to meet with you.

You could start by discussing PSATs...also get information about SATs/SAT IIs as you should be taking those now. GCs should have info from the collegeboard about them. Prepare some questions...and lead the discussion into college if you want. I'm guessing you just want to make sure he knows who you are, so that he can write about you come rec time. The only way to do that is to visit him from time to time with questions. You might also consider bringin your parents for a meeting so that he'll take it seriously.
