on Facebook. yay or nay?

Eh, I did that and I didn’t end up meeting any of them in real life. You’ll find a group of (offline) friends and so will the people you met on Facebook and you’ll never hear from them again (unless you make a conscious effort to do so).

Seems like such an artificial way to meet friends. It should come naturally (when you are actually at the campus).

I never talked to the people I met on Facebook before school. Ditto for the first few people I met in school. You can, it won’t hurt and there could be exceptions, I’m sure, but I wouldn’t expect to meet your new best friend on Facebook. Or in the first few days of school.

I think this is even more true the bigger your school is. Also, I think the one exception might be your roommate, if you want. It’s good to reach out and figure out who’s bringing what at the very least.

I did and I made some friends that way. Can’t hurt to try.

The vast majority of FB friends I made for college, before I college, I’ve never met in person. A lot of them had friended me simply because I was going to live in the same community as them or was taking the same class. Only one person I met exclusively through FB has become a friend (a very close one at that) and she introduced me to my other close friends.

But you can use these FB friends you’ll never meet if you want to campaign for something and need votes. I got a few votes that way.
