meeting with college advisor- what to bring

What do you need to bring when you have meetings at orientation with your advisor? What should I have ready for them? Like a plan of a schedule for 4 years? Anything else?

Do NOT bring a plan of your schedule for 4 years. Come with a plan for the first semester. Maybe if you’re planning on a very structured major the second semester as well. Don’t plan (or try to tell your adviser your plan) for 4 years.

In addition to that try to research a little about any classes you might be considering in addition or as a replacement to any courses you intend to take.

Don’t expect too much. The only time I’ve seen my adviser is for administrative stuff (IE, declaring a major). I saw my freshmen adviser because I had to, but I pretty much disregarded anything he said. You’ll get much better advice talking to other people at your school or asking on the forums here than you will talking to an adviser. If you want to find out more about a class you can also email the professor. The adviser is primarily an administrative agent.

I’m a music major as well as history, so yeah, planning is very important.

Are those in two different colleges? If so then I would make sure you ask what sort of collaboration you need to maintain between the two schools.

Still, don’t bring a plan for 4 years. It is very unrealistic. Things you don’t know about will change it. Classes will disappear, only be offered certain semesters, be full. Professors will be bad and you will switch 1 class for another. There will be scheduling conflicts. Plenty of other things can happen.

My advisor just wanted to hear about general life goals- what schools I was looking into for transferring, future career goals, etc.

Mine asked about my planned major, academic direction, etc, looked at a list of classes I wanted to take, suggested a few, made sure I wasn’t stacking too much and that’s it.
If you bring a 4 year plan, your adviser will laugh at you. Ha ha.

If you’re a guy and she’s hot, bring a nice bottle of wine, and wear really nice clothes.

@Vladedschlutte,

Yes, the music major is the School of Music & the history major is the College of Liberal Arts. Thanks for the advice.
