Meeting with Counselor

Today I had my meeting with my counselor and parents. It was a 90 minute meeting where she went over my list and gave me feedback and such. I presented my list of schools. First off I live in CA go to a private catholic school, 99% of grads go to college. Its a good school with really smart kids. Im not one of those uber smart kids keep that in mind lol. I want to major in IR and my list of colleges where: Safeties- Cal state: SF, SD, SJ
Matches- University of Washington
Goucher College
University of Toronto
George Mason University
University of the pacific
Depaul University
Reaches- UC Davis, Irvine
American University
She went over my schools and was impressed because of how different all the schools were. Background info of my school is that like most of the grauating class goes to a UC school. I dont want to go to a UC for various reasons. I dont actually think i can get into them lol and they honestly just dont appeal. My UC GPA is about a 3.3. Additional information ... im hispanic from low socioecon background.Overall she was like really pumping University of Toronto because she recently came back from a canadian school seminar and was really impressed. She was very suprised anyone from my school would leave sunny California for Canada. The other school she plugged was UoP and U of W. The schools at this point that most appeal are University of Washington, Depaul, and University of Toronto. I actually dont know much about Depaul but it just appeals to me. I also like University of Torontos like joint major thing its IR/peace conflict resolution. What it'd like from you readers is feedback on my meeting and any suggestions or added schools are soooo welcome please!!! Sorry for the disorganization of this...

UWashington and UToronto have a similar feel, although I like Toronto as a city better.

I think the counselor meant that you have a good admissions list in the sense that you are applying to schools in different regions, which may give you a slight edge (coupled with your socioeconomic and minority status).

I'd like to suggest George Washington, Tufts, University of Oregon, and George Mason as well.

You have a good shot at most of your reaches and ALL of your matches.

My S in a huge title I public school can't get 90 minutes with a counselor in 4 years - all put together. You have wonderful opportunities and it sounds like you will do well with them! Trinity Univ. in Texas has an IR program as well.

Ive never heard anything about University of Oregon when it comes to IR but i will definately investigate. George Mason was on my list i just forgot to type it in. Tufts and George Washington i have heard from this forum is that they are to out of reach for me.

I would not be too sure about GWU or Tufts being out of reach, especially if you apply early.

BTW, at UOregon, they call it International Studies rather than IR. It would be a safety for you.

With a 3.3 GPA Tufts is a very, very high reach. GWU would be a slight reach.

American is more realistic than George Washington, but you might want to apply to both.

I hope you will be making a visit to the DC/Baltimore area to see George Washington, American, George Mason, and Goucher. Be especially careful to ask plenty of questions at George Mason. It's a nice place that's becoming increasingly respected BUT it still draws mostly from the local area, and a lot of the students commute. Would there be enough going on on campus, especially on weekends, to interest an out-of-stater like you? It would be good to ask questions about this issue during a tour or just informally with students you meet on campus.
