So i got admitted to a pretty big school and have already decided to go there. I'm going there tomorrow in order to check out some places to live and take care of some financial aid stuff.

I also scheduled a meeting with the head of my department just to get to know him face to face. I was planning on wearing a dress shirt, dress pants, and tie. Is this too much for something so informal? I figured it couldn't hurt to make a good impression.

That sounds fine to me! It’s not too dressy but not too casual.
Or I’d switch the dress pants for nice slacks.

Chances are that he will be casually dressed. I don’t know much about men’s fashion but I think an open collar would work fine. Overall, keep what you have!

Clean jeans or cargo pants with a collar shirt or polo. Blend in with the other students. No need to look like you are going to church. Summer is casual. Be comfortable. Show your respect be addressing him as Dr.____, be on time or better a little early, thank him for his time.

Bring the shades. When you make enter the room, before you introduce yourself, whip off your shades and say, “So, I hear you are the head of the department . . .”

Oh yes, we all know that faculty chairs are constantly impressed by the coolness of goofy adolescent gags. ;)

chimi42, what you describe is fine, although you could probably take it down a notch or two (read: lose the tie) and be perfectly appropriate. IMHO the best thing you can do impression-wise is to be polite, focused, and respectful of his time. Have a definite purpose for your visit, articulate it clearly and succinctly, and don’t “hang around” just trying to score face time if he seems to be busy. This is the end of the fiscal year for many colleges, a very busy time for department chairs. While he’ll probably be very happy to meet you, he may not have a lot of time for a lengthy chat. Good luck with your freshman year!
