Mega Thread: Calling on all current & prospective ROTC parents

Checked application tracker - Our child did not get the scholarship. She has a 3.75+ gpa and 1350 SAT. AP classes, activities, etc. Accepted EA to James Madison University. Accepted to other choices and waiting to hear on her first choice college. Scratching my head on this one. The only thing I can think of is that she did not apply for engineering/science majors.
Good luck.

^^^
Not that it is much comfort but your daughter has a lot of disappointed company from the last AFROTC board. Supposedly they reviewed 1500 applicants for 500 scholarships. There were some kids with 2150 SATs that were not awarded scholarships. If your daughter is certain that the Air Force is right for her, there are many in-college AFROTC scholarships that she can apply for… Good luck to both of you!

I think that this is a major factor. Remember the AF is a small service and actually downsizing. Their need for officers is largely for those who can bring a technical background to the service. She certainly may join AFROTC at her college of choice (provided it’s offered) without a scholarship. Good luck to her.

1350 was the CR and M combined scores. Can’t recall the writing score.

^^^
1350 M/CR is a VERY good score. Reviewing some of the stats for the applicants that were turned down yesterday (including some engineer majors), it is obvious that it is getting to be very difficult to get a 4 year HSSP AFROTC scholarship.

Did you daughter apply to any of the other ROTC programs? Her stats would almost certainly earn her a scholarship with one of them.

Navy ROTC would have the same problem. 85% of the NROTC scholarships are now required to be Tier 1 and Tier 2 majors. Engineering, Computers, Math, Science. The competition for the remaining 15% is fierce.

I also did not receive any scholarship offer, and apparently wont be boarded again. I thought I was competitive, and my major is Aerospace Engineering. Other stats- 2000 SAT, 30 ACT, 4.0 WGPA, lots of ECs with moderate leadership, and varsity athlete. Talk about disappointment!

What do you make of this?:

The ROO at Son’s #1 school sent him an email suggesting that he switch to ED, even tho the ED deadline was Jan 1. Interesting. She said this suggestion came from Admissions.

H and I wouldn’t allow ED back in Dec just in case the scholarship fell through due to some undiagnosed medical DQ. But, now that he’s passed medical, and the school will still take an ED contract, Son’s gonna go for it.

Good sign?

Interesting. I noticed that ED at his school is rolling admissions where RD is an April 1 notification. IIRC, he already received a scholarship to this school, correct?
My guess is that they are going to admit him and if he switches to ED they can do it right away and he will be obligated to attend and thus they will have a “definite” in place for that scholarship.
So, yeah - it’s a good sign! (JMHO ;))

Update - Son received his acceptance to WFU on Friday. Yippee! He’ll be taking his scholarship to his first choice school.

It was Feb 10 when the ROO suggested he switch to ED. Due to the blizzards, he couldn’t get the GC signature quickly and the ED contract wasn’t in the mail until Fri, Feb 19. The acceptance letter was dated Tues., Feb 23. That’s quick.

Congratulations!!! Yippee! (I love it when I am right! haha  )

Congrats to you and your son DougBetsy!

Many congrats to DougBetsy’s S and welcome to North Carolina.
Let the running and push-ups begin:)

Congratulations DougBetsy, and to all who have had their dreams come true, and good luck to all still waiting for good news from upcoming boards!

Here is another ROTC tidbit we found out this year. You can do study abroad as a contracted ROTC cadet and you can even apply for ROTC to pay for your travel expenses! You probably need to do study abroad freshman or sophomore year, as ROTC leadership responsibilities increase starting in the junior year.

Does anyone know if you can delay for one more year to do a master degree while you are on NROTC? Is this a possibility?

zena, I had one son go through AFROTC and another that’s currently in AROTC, so I’m not sure about the Navy, but I’m fairly certain that Army and AF don’t allow that. Now, I have heard about AF Academy cadets sometimes having the option to begin work on their Master’s immediately after they are commissioned (they might have to go through their branch training first). Presumably, the AF would pay for that, and there would be an additional obligation incurred.

Hello everyone! I’m resurrecting this old thread as we get close to freshman year.

Son will move in to his dorm at WFU on Thursday. There’s an ROTC family meet & greet on Friday. Then he has his APFT at 0630 on Saturday. ::GULP:: It’s happening. It’s really happening.

How are things with the rest of the students on this thread? Getting close? :)

I came across this info on another forum. Thought it would be interesting reading for any new AROTC cadets. I only wish it told us how many applications there were: [Army ROTC awards $51 million in scholarships](http://www.army.mil/-news/2010/08/11/43561-army-rotc-awards-51-million-in-scholarships/)

Cheers and good luck! :)

Good Luck to DB’s son!!!

S is halfway through his contract post commissioning. (Hard to believe…)

Because of security reasons, he couldn’t give us the time, but today is the day he leaves Iraq as a member of the last combat brigade there… heading to Kuwait and then back to USA by the end of the month.

I was totally opposed to him joining ROTC. However, I will be the first to admit, that he joined as a child, and has grown in to a man.

Your son has some great experiences to look forward to.

P.S. I think D is playing tennis today with a young man going to WFU and ROTC…wouldn’t it be weird if it was him? :o

That would be very weird, 1sokkermom. My S should be packing! Not playing tennis! ;)
