Looking for specific brands that you would or would not recommend for memory foam mattress pads. I've looked at Costco.com and there are at least 5 different types. I think my head will explode if I dare walk into BBBY and try to process the different types. Also, what should we expect to pay?

We just purchased the one from Isotonic. It was $100 less 20% with the BB&B coupon.

for you or your college kid? For college kid we bought off of overstock.com .perfectly fine

We purchased on online at Wal-Mart and had it delivered to the store near the campus. The brand selected was based on reviews. We got SpaSensations 4". It is a challenge to pack it up, but we’ve managed for several moves in and out of dorms. It has a cover that washes and son likes it. The thicker the foam topper, the harder to transport (but perhaps more comfort). They come in a duffle bag, but never fit back in. We roll and secure with bungie cords or fold on the bottom and top with heavier items to compress. It seems to be two inches of egg carton style with 2 inches of foam. Between moves, I air it outside and unzip and wash the cover. Our son’s topper is now 2 years old. I would research at local stores, Target, Wal-Mart, etc. and find one that his fits your price point, gets decent reviews and consider if you want one you can just throw out at the end of the year (because that’s easier) or want to invest in a better one but have to lug it back and forth.

I’m not the OP, of course, but I’ve been wondering about this also - thank you!

We got a memory foam topper at a discount close-out store but originally from Target. It was $10 and about 2" thick. DS liked it although he’s not fussy. For what we paid, we had no qualms about throwing it out at the end of the year although it looked like it would have lasted if we had wanted to save it for another year.

Based on past experience, I would recommend a 2" pad with a 4 lb density.

After two kids in college and lots of pads, I think Walmart best brand is the best value for the money.

I’ve started looking for one for my S also. He likes the 2" ones…I know that you need to be careful as some of them have a “smell”…will look at the ones on the above posts.

Of all of the ones that you have found do any come in a twin extra long to match the size of the dorm mattresses?

Yes, overstock has twin extra longs

We purchased one from Wal-Mart for our camper. It’s great. Also, brought it inside and used it on our sleeper sofa to make it more comfortable. (It was too large to fold up inside the sofa, but was perfect while I recovered from surgery and couldn’t use the stairs to get up to our bedroom for a week or so.)

Just bought a Twin X Long at Kohl’s for 34.99 regular price 69.99. Plus I had 30% off coupon. It is memory foam with 5 distinct zones of support. It is confusing and they had many choices that were much more expensive. I remember getting this egg carton style for my older daughter and she loved it so we will see how this one works out for younger one.

I just ordered a “Soft sleeper” memory foam pad through amazon.com with free shipping and a 100 day satisfaction guarantee. As to smell- you definitely have to let them air out for a few days. It has fairly good reviews on amazon- but we’lll see

[Amazon.com: Soft Sleeper 5.5 Twin XL 2 inch Visco Elastic Memory Foam Mattress Pad, Bed Topper: Home & Garden](http://www.amazon.com/Soft-Sleeper-Visco-Elastic-Memory/dp/B0016GBGBO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1307015088&sr=1-1)

Don’t these memory foam mattresses make for rather warm beds? When older D went to college only the egg crates were available, but the school did provide a thicker mattress than the ones at the place younger D is about to attend. These look like they need an entire new mattress on top of them – or else a bedboard beneath.

I bought one for myself at JC Penney that’s been very comfortable. Thick and cumbersome, couldn’t bring it anywhere, more of a “Permanent” item. For our daughter’s camp bunk I did pick up an egg crate type one at Target…19.99…light and OK for that purpose.

Thanks - for college kid. We are fortunate that school is <45 minutes from home and we have a minivan, so bulk is not an issue. She attended orientation last week and slept in 2 dorms, the second night dorm is sister dorm of where she will be and reported that bed was much better than first night, so I wonder how much I need to think about this. (She is also a sound sleeper that often falls asleep on the couch watching TV, so she’s not too picky about what she sleeps on!)

Our kids had the twin XL, 2", 4lb density Mem-Cool topper from Overstock under a good quality mattress pad. The beds were very comfy and they did not have a problem with them being too warm.

JC Penney has XL, basic egg crate, $12.99…dd used for 2 years, still in good shape.

I purchased the Costco version, I think it was Nova gel or something like that. I spent alot of time reading the reviews. I was a little skeptical at first but we desperately needed to improve the quality of our rather old queen mattress (didn’t want to replace just yet). Anyway, I bought one and my experience was:
- The smell wasn’t a big deal. Honestly, it was minimal at first and completely non-existent within a few days.
- I was able to handle getting the pad onto my bed with no help, in spite of other reviewers talking about how difficult/awkward it was.
- H& I noticed an improvement immediately in teh quality of our sleep. Believe it or not, his snoring was almost eliiminated (he wasn’t a heavy snorer to begin with, but enough that it woke me from time to time. I have no idea why this pad would help but who am I to question this kind of luck!) and my nagging morning back pain was GONE.

For the price (around $100 or so with coupon), it was well worth the money. I would highly recommend one for anyone looking for extra mileage out of an older mattress or to improve comfort of a too-stiff one. We also added one to an old double size guuest mattress which seemed a bit too soft. It really improved that one too.
