Meningitis Vaccines

I’m so frustrated. My D had an appointment with a new primary care doctor (she’s switching from the pediatrician) last week before she went back to college. I told her to make sure she asked about getting the meningitis B vaccine and one other thing and she asked about neither. Her school is small and the health center not great, so I doubt they will have it.

@OHMomof2 @Barbalot ask your local pharmacies about Bexsero and Trumenba.

Good news - our family doctor has it. They just need proof that the health dept gave her the first dose. Shouldn’t be a problem to schedule it.

Great news!

Just a data point- my daughter got her second shot before returning to college and she was sick the next day with aches, chills, and a lot of nausea. She was not able to go to work. Just wanted to pass that along just in case. I read this upstream so had my D get the shot with 5 days still at home.

Wow good to know., @VMT . Did she not react that way to the first one? D’s arm was sore, that was it.

Her arm was sore with the first shot, no other side effects. A few people she worked with said they also had a reaction to the second shot.

My son had a sore arm after the 1st Bexsero shot, but no reaction after the 2nd.

Same for my daughter. I think it might have hurt a little after the 2nd shot, but not like it did after the first one.

Same for mine.

I recall reading about half the people who get the shot have some side effect- that includes the standard sore arm. I didn’t mean to be alarmist. I’m sure most do not have anything significant beyond soreness.

No, but it’s good to keep in mind that this is possible. I always tried to get the flu shot when I knew I’d have a few days off work (so, usually a Friday) just in case I became sore and achey afterwards.

Back when DS#2 had to get his shot, he was asked to participate in a drug study - I forget what they were looking at but we were assured that it was active vaccine and at an acceptable dosage. He was paid $100. He felt no pain

It was required at my D’s school

Just to chip in… Pediatricians office said they started giving Bexero in the thigh instead of the arm and the issues with pain at the injection site and even some of the others like fatigue and aches have gone down tremendously.

@carachel2 - very interesting, my D had a very sore arm and fatigue for a week both times with the vaccine. Glad to hear there might be alternate injection site.
