My daughter finally got her second dose of Bexsero, 10 months after the first dose. She went to the university student health center, and had to show proof that she had had the first dose before they would give her the second. It was 100% covered through Premera Blue Cross. Again, her arm was extremely sore to the point where it kept her awake the first night.
I live I CT and can’t find the Bexsero vaccination for my son who leaves for college this August. Dr. does not have it and won’t order it and I even called the local VNA. It seems like you need a college outbreak to have accessible vaccines in your state. Looks like he will get his first shot at Lehigh in August. Any other people from CT have any luck finding this vaccination?

This website mentioned by @Dragonflygarden shows the Men B vaccine available in Connecticut at branches of Target, CVS and Passport Health, among other places.
We live in CT and our pediatrician (will follow patients till college grad) had meningitis B vaccines in the Trumenbra brand. My son rec’d first when he got home in Early May, second to be rec’d 2 months later. There is a third that he will have to get at fall break.
I looked at that site ciervo but it did not say which meningitis vaccine it was. There are two vaccines. My son needs the newer one which is ether Trumenba or Bexsero I believe. He has had the Menactra which is one of the older vaccinations. I was hoping to find the Bexsero because you only need two shots. You must have a nicer Dr. bhmomma. I had thought he would at least order it for me. I will call CVS and see which one they carry ciervo. Thanks.
On the right side of the page of http://vaccine.healthmap.org/ is the list of all possible vaccines. First hit “deselect all” to clear the check marks. Then hit the plus sign after the word “meningococcal” to see the drop down list of three possible meningococcal vaccines. Select “MenB”, and the listing on the left will update automatically to show the locations. The one thing it does not indicate is whether the the MenB available at each site is Trumenba or Bexsero.
A Northeastern student died this past May from meningitis B. My D attends Northeastern but has been in CA on a coop since Jan.
I have not read all six pages of this thread, so I don’t know if this comment has been addressed yet.
In a word: No. First of all, it works. Second of all, there is no scientific plausibility for a vaccine making you “worse” if it didn’t work.
@mommdc If it wears off, it doesn’t really matter in practical terms. The risk for meningitis B is greatest in college freshmen living in dorms. The risk tapers off over the next few years and plummets after college. I would have about as much concern about getting meningitis B after college as I would about getting struck by lightning.
By the way, the ONLY reason APIC has not added the serogroup B vaccine to the schedule of routine vaccines for children is that they did not want to face the backlash by some sectors who say there are too many recommended vaccines. It is not because they don’t think it’s important.
This makes no sense. Both men B vaccines are FDA-approved. Any doctor in the US can order it. Trumenba is made by Pfizer. Bexsero is made by Novartis. I am certain your pediatrician has a relationship with at least one of these drug companies. They can just add it to their next order.
I think you need a new doctor. His/her info is way out of date. During the Princeton outbreak a few years ago, FDA gave permission for them to order the men B vaccine from Europe because it was not yet approved here. But Trumenba has been approved here since 10/14, and Bexsero since 1/15.
D’s arm was fairly sore for a few days. Otherwise, all good.
Same thing here. One down and one to go.
Really annoyed with my Doc in CT. My wonderful pharmacist at Stop & Shop is ordering Bexero today and will give the shot to my son this Thursday. WTH? Writing a nasty letter to the Doc. I am totally willing to eat the cost of the vaccination too. Just wanted it done before he leaves in August. Really cannot understand why the Doc’s office would not order it.
D had vaccine about 3 weeks ago and complained (loudly) about the pain in her arm. She will get the second Bexsero dose the day before I go out-of-town without her in July.
What is the difference between Bexsero and Trumenba? Our doctor doesn’t have any but our local CVS clinic has Trumenba.
Bexsero is a 2 shot series, Trumenba a 3 shot series (at least when D got it last year).
@asil65 to echo some others on here, I think it’s time to find a new doc… but absolutely let them know why you left.

some more information
Thank you @mommdc They have different side effects as well.
Sorry to be invading the parents forum, but I’m a senior and just got my first dose of Bexsero yesterday. I’m suffering some side effects- ~100 degre fever, chills, muscle aches, nausea/ puking, and of course a sore arm. That being said, I’d rather deal with what’s basically a minor flu because of the vaccine than worry about contracting Meningitis B this fall. I cannot stress it enough, it’s worth it!
