Men's Crew @ Wes: Can I Walk On?

Hello everyone!

Just for a little background, I am from a major city in Gulf-Coast Texas, but am interested in participating in crew during college. For those not native to Texas, or the South in general, crew is basically nonexistent.

I was wondering whether it is possible to “walk-on” to the crew team, of course not at the varsity level initially, but I would like to pick it up during my freshman year.

Do any students (or parents for that matter) have any experience with walking-on to the crew team, or any athletic team for that matter?

Thanks!

Worth the read for Andrew’s backstory alone, but, he also answers your question (it’s in the affirmative.)

@circuitrider thank you so much for the link!

You definitely can. It’s D3. And the men are not nearly as competitive as the women. My daughters both row…one is going D1 and one is going to Wes (and will be on the crew team). Both have been rowing varsity crew for 4 years. But there are tons of walk-ons because not that many high schoolers have experience.
