Men's dress clothes specifics

Dress clothes are included on the list of what to bring,
and I'm wondering what specifically is needed ...
Will khakis, a button-down, and jacket work?
Polo shirt and khakis?

When are dress clothes worn?

Unless you're a music major, dress clothes are necessary for some presentations, college nights, and social events like Esperanza in the fall.

What you've described (khakis, button down, jacket) should be fine, but bring a couple of ties, too.

What would you wear out to a nice dinner or a fancy event? I have worn a button-down and khakis many times, and although I have not needed my suit very often, there have been a few times that I've been very glad to have it. I would recommend having a full range of dress clothes, but in smaller quantities of each than you would at home. I have three or four nice button-downs, two polos, two pairs of khakis, a pair of slacks, a blue blazer, a suit, and a couple of ties. That's worked out pretty well.

I'm pretty sure that there are some guys at Rice who manage to make it all four years without putting on a single shirt with a collar. I'd advise against that though. Until junior or senior year when i started doing interviews for real off-campus jobs, I never had any need for a suit.
For most of your time at Rice, a few business casual outfits will be fine for presentations, interviewing people for classes, etc. And whatever you wear out to the theater or a nice dinner.

A suit is definitely not a necessity for the first couple years at Rice. I don't intend to have one next (Junior) year, either. Those things are expensive!

^^ LOL with Houston's heat plus being in the south, people dress more casual even to go to the theatre - I guess I'd say anything goes but people aren't fussed about it.

Dorian-
Not if you go to Value Village!

I actually got mine from Sym's, which is great for discounted second-run formalwear. I got a Calvin Klein suit that fits me really well for less than $300!

But really, you can definitely get by without a suit. I wouldn't say I've ever been in a situation where I've needed it; only those in which I've been very glad to have it, like Rondelet and Esperanza.

You do have a point. I have a blazer that cost me $7.50, but as such I don't really count it as formal wear.

there isnt a value village anymore :(

Only one of them closed. There's still one that's open (on Holcombe, I believe). Also, Salvation Army on West Gray is pretty decent (but not like Value Village).

the holcombe/bellaire one closed down as well

My bad; it's the one on Shepherd that's still open.

maybe

Store Locator

there isnt one in houston (unless this is a different company)

there's still a value village out in west houston... but I don't think you'd want to drive that far unless you have a ton of people and a bunch of different outfits/costumes that you're looking for. (The place is great for 80's and prom party... and halloween!)

where can i find this list of stuff to bring?

Rice University O-Week: Undergraduates

DS survived freshman year without a blazer, or a suit; he doesn't own one. He did take a tie, but never wore it. This has started me thinking, though, about dragging the boy out to see if we can find something at a consignment store or Men's Warehouse....

to see if we can find something at a consignment store or Men's Warehouse

If you know his size(s), we've had extremely good luck with ebay. The selection is much better than most consignment shops (esp. if you have time to be a little patient), and the prices can be quite attractive, even with an allowance for alterations.

hmmm. that's an interesting thought! He hasn't been sized yet, but I'm guessing that he is a 40L or XL. I'll have to scope it out! :)
