Hi~ I am here for some suggestion of my college application essay.
Is it a problem to take about the mental illness at essay? Even though I know that it is not recommended to choose this topic, it really makes me who I am and what I learn from it. I had Bipolar Disorder when I was at my high school in China. It is struggling for me to take a gap and get the treatement for two years. Everyone around me could not imagine that, since I always keep my positive smile on my face and I study hard all the time. At first I complain about what happened that ruined my life, but now I realize it is the valuable experience for me. It taught me how to get along with others, integrate into a new community and keep looking forward. However, I get upset about how people try to avoid talking about that in essay, and suggest it as the extremely negative thing. Mental illness seemingly is still a social stigma, people like me sometimes are labled as the dangerous ones. I just want to get a chance to prove I could get better that what they think.
Overall, should I insist on what I would love to do now or don’t talk about that?
Thanks for all your helping.
There’s a similar post called Controversial Essay Topic that addresses this. If I knew how I’d post a link. But several, including myself, have commented on this.
