One of my college essays about the variety of experiences I've had contains a very brief mention of being the subject of a lawsuit but it says that it was completely without merit.

I think it adds color, but I can definitely see why it would be best to err on the side of caution. I have plenty of other interesting things to mention, but that is one of the more interesting parts of my life. Obviously, the lawsuit wasn't about anything serious..but...

Unless your essay goes indepth with the lawsuit and the ordeal that you went through with it I would definitely avoid it. This is mainly due to the fact that a) it puts (well it may put) this thought into the admission officers mind of “oh, this kid attracts trouble…” and b) just mentioning it in brief while adding the “without merit” makes it sound a lot worse than it probably was and doesn’t necessarily shine a positive light on you.

Also, I’m just wondering but was there no type of restriction(s) placed on either party with the lawsuit in regards to its disclosure? Because if there was and you mention it, that could spell legal trouble for you.

Anyways, just my opinion, don’t mention it in your essay =)
