Mentorship Program Fall 2016

See some others saying they were offered slots in the Fall 2016 Mentorship Program with Spring 2017 admission to the American University program.

Thought I’d start a separate thread as people weigh the pros and cons of doing this.

Weigh in!

Not going to lie, but I thought I would be accepted to AU for fall semester, but I was given this instead.
Is this like good or bad?

I was really confused by this. I think it’s probably that they want to make their stats look more selective by letting in the students with lower scores in later or something

Spring admission is becoming more and more popular with universities and colleges. The past two years American has let too many students in and there isn’t enough housing. I think the are trying to control that. By having spring admits, you can replace the students that left after a semester, are graduating or traveling abroad. There is just more space on campus for spring semester. At least with this mentorship program, you can be on campus for the first semester.

Also, on social media there should be a Class of 2020 for American University. Go there and ask this question. Older students monitor the page and answer questions.

Hey guys!!!I was accepted for the spring semester and also the mentorship program. Kindly temme which locations you are opting for and the positives of each. Thanks

Hi! This program is very confusing to me. I’m honestly kind of surprised I didn’t get in regularly. My scores aren’t amazing but they’re well within AU’s range, as well as my gpa and I’m an URM. I would never be able to afford the mentorship program though, so sadly AmericanU is no longer an option, though it doesn’t sound too bad if you have the moolah.

I got accepted to this last year and declined. What got me was the lack of financial aid. Zero. Seems odd that they offered me their “prestigious” Washington Mentorship Program, the opportunity to live on campus and participate in internships, and then offered zero financial aid. I went elsewhere. Others however enjoyed it. I simply wasn’t willing/able to finance it and didn’t want a boat load of loans.

will they even tell you if you have a possibility of financial aid in spring semester?

Also, be careful. If you read the fine print, I believe they say that you have to find the internship yourself after they give you some guidelines.

Hey @mylamyla ! Where have you read that info?? Can you direct me to a link? I haven’t seen a statement like that in my acceptance letter.

@LordNerevar I remember it saying that on the website I think

Here is the info from the FAQ section of the Washington Mentor section of the AU website:

HOW ARE STUDENTS PLACED IN THEIR MENTORED FIELD PRACTICUM (INTERNSHIP)?
WMP does not place students in internships; students are given the tools to secure an internship on their own with guidance from their MFP professor and program advisor. Searching for an internship is a key skill developed through the practicum course.

Over the course of the summer, students are given access to resume resources and work with program staff to fine-tune their resumes in June and early July. Students are then given access to the SPExS Internship Database, which has one of the largest collections of internship offerings in the DC area. Students are highly encouraged to start applying to internships posted on the database over the summer.

On the first day of class, students attend the school’s Internship Fair, where they can meet with over 100 internships sites. Finally, students also work with the WMP office and their MFP professor to fine-tune their search and secure an internship.
