Merit aid at Miami of Ohio

@BreakfastClub1 Accepted today. Applied RD.

@ilikefootball36 Do you fall in the chart range? I would wait until the end of the month and call after that if you do not hear anything.

@ilikefootball36 Why wait? Call them up. They either gave you aid or they didn’t.

@EDHDAD If I call they will respond to me over the phone?

@ilikefootball36 If you call them they will be happy to tell you what your merit aid award is, but the person answering the phone probably cannot or will not discuss how the amount was decided.

@EDHDAD Awesome! I’ll call right now :slight_smile:

We are in NY and our daughter has a 31 ACT superscored (30 each time, but looks like Miami does superscore) an around a 3.7 weighted GPA at rigorous HS with a good mix of AP, honors and regular classes.

Anyone care to take a guess on merit based on other comments/previous history? The $8k on the low end of the chart won’t get us there, but the $18k on the high end might. Any real possibility she could get that much with those stats?

Get her into the higher box in the chart, 30 ACT isnt bad, but it is not the best score to barter with either. In my personal experience, studying (i mean doing 1000s of practice problems and what not) can yield way better results than someone would expect. Have her take time over summer, a week or so, and everyday have her study for the ACT, and she will get a score that puts her in a higher box in the chart @lexluthor5

Getting close to application time. It looks like the merit page now lists Fall 2019 as out of state $11-$20K for a 30-32 ACT with a 3.5GPA. She’s at a 31 superscore with a 3.7 GPA. If she got into the middle of the range, it would make Miami a financial fit, especially with 4 year tuition promise. Not really sure how likely that is though?

@lexluthor5 Good luck with the application. My daughter is currently a freshman. I found this table to be pretty accurate. Needless to say there are other factors that each university looks at. But, my daughter as well as a couple of friends that attend Miami were pretty consistent with the table. If that is her target school, I would submit the ACT as you have mentioned, I would also consider her to retake the ACT again. IF she score better great, if not, no harm. I don’t want to make light of retaking the ACT. I know its stressful and a ton of prep work. But for us, my daughter went from a 32 to a 34 on her ACT. In terms of money, that was a game changer. Good luck. (PS. My daughter had a few serious offers. In the end it came down to Miami and Villanova. She couldn’t be happier.)

@college dad 2B She actually just took it again, but didn’t put too much effort into it. There’s no way she’s going to get it into the next level for Miami (OH) at this point. If she can get to the middle of the range with her 31 superscore ACT, that probably keeps Miami (OH) very much in the mix.
She’s going to apply EA and will have the application submitted within the next couple of weeks.

Good luck to your daughter. Nonetheless, that is a pretty solid score. She will do well.

My son has a 33 on his ACT and 3.7 unweighted GPA. How do they decide of you get the lower end of the scholarship vs the full tuition? We really need the full tuition scholarship to make this happen.

@COboysmom I think it depends on a lot of different factors - difficulty of high school classes, intended major, home state/city/high school, etc. If you read past posts in this thread, you’ll find many posts with applicant stats and scholarship amount received. We are in state and I have two Ds at Miami. Both received near the upper end of the chart. Good luck to your son!

This is an amazing chart (we got it in the mail as well). I wonder why the other state schools in Ohio don’t seem to be nearly as generous. Miami is the most expensive, but still . . . A chart like this for OSU or UC would really be something.

@COboysmom Unfortunately, I tend to doubt that would be good enough for full tuition. In same boat as you and have done some research with anecdotal evidence… If I had to guess, he’d be around $18-19K.

Great news our front. Our daughter took another ACT in September and scored way higher than we could have expected and she then had a 32.25 superscore. She wasn’t thrilled when we said she had to give it one more shot in October to get that one extra point improvement in any section. She worked hard only on the math and got the point, but also improved science by 2 points. Great job on her part. As you can see in my last post, we didn’t think there was much shot of a 33.

She’s now got a solid 33 superscore and Miami should be very high on the list. Hopefully she gets in yet and then we’ll plan to go to an accepted student’s day in February.

She’s ol got 3.6/3.7 weighted gpa (92.01 is the actual number) with the 33 act. Varsity sport and decent amount of community service. More then likely she’ll wind up at the very low end of the 33+ table?

For Merit Scholarship does Miami Superscore the ACT for the chart? We are OOS and my DD applied EA but falls in the range of the higest scholarship but we have no idea how to determine what factors they use in terms of offering her the half or full ride.

Also, when do they tell her the amount they offer? Is it on Dec 15 when she receives her decision, or does it come in the mail with the official acceptance?

If they use GPA to also determine the level of scholarship, do they use the Weighted or Unweighted GPA? She has a lot of rigor and many AP courses but the chart doesn’t give any indication of what they use to determine the amount of scholarship awarded.

Thanks!
