Merit aid at Miami of Ohio

I see that Miami of Ohio offers some generous merit scholarships. I’m wondering if anyone has experience with them. I’m interested in stats, of course, but would also love to know how many they give!

@Momto2girls - If you Google this topic you should find threads from 2015/2016 and 2016/2017. My son is a rising junior majoring in bio-engineering, so his stats are from three years ago. FWIW, we are OOS and he got $20k per year. His GPA was around 3.6 unweighted from a very well regarded high school. He had a 33 on the ACT and passed 13 AP classes with a 4.5/5 average. His extracurriculars were good but not great. He applied early admission, but not early decision.

I assume that you saw this chart for 2017 admissions. http://miamioh.edu/admission/merit-grid/

My son is very happy at Miami. There are a lot of OOS students and he has made some very good friends, despite being a bit of an introvert. He has no interest at all in fraternities.

There was a mom who used to post here whose DD got a full tuition award. Her DD is now about 28 or 29 years old…her DD is now in her 3rd year of medical residency for dermatology so she was a high school senior 10+ years ago…so her situation isn’t current.

However, she was Val of her high school class and had a high ACT. Her award was competitive and was actually the combination of 2-3 awards, that totaled to tuition (not room and board or books), and one of the awards was thru their honors college (it was an endowed award…also competitive).

@Beaudreau how much are your remaining costs after $20k of merit? Does tuition go up every year? How much is OOS tuition now?

@mom2collegekids - Nice to hear from you! You have 8,000 more posts than last time I heard from you. At $10 a post, you are doing great.

Miami freezes tuition, room & board, and fees for each entering class for four years. Tuition and fees were frozen for us at $31,592 for OOS students. Housing and meals at $12,104. So our net cost is about $23,700 annually, plus books, travel, etc. For students starting last fall, OOS tuition was $32,555, with room & board at $12,454. 2017 rates have not yet been set.

I had a 3.8 with a 30 and I got $13500 a year

My son had a 4.3 GPA at a very challenging private school, 1490 SAT, tons of AP’s. He got $16,500 OOS. I think merit aid here is getting much more competitive.

@mom2collegekids, I have seen that kid from Miami mentioned several times, always saying she was Val. Her class was only 32 students…just saying. Being number 1 from a class of 32 with a 33 Act…not so impressive.

^^ and all she did was her homework every night!

Also…that student was an instate Ohio resident…the one who got the full tuition scholarship to Miami.

To the OP…are you instate for Ohio?

I was accepted to Miami last year (graduated HS 2017). I was awarded $7,000 year, so the chart listed on Miami’s website is pretty accurate. http://miamioh.edu/admission/merit-grid/
My stats
OOS
28 ACT
1320 New SAT
15 AP/DE Classes
roughly an unweighted 3.7 GPA
2 legal internships
I was involved in many clubs and the president of one.

$23,000 per year for a total of 92 thousand for IN STATE!!!

University Academic Scholars Program and Honors
Direct into Farmers

ACT: 35

uwgpa: 3.5
wgpa: 3.8

13 APs
President of 3 clubs and LOTS of ec including interships

Reaction: I am so surprised by how much they gave me. This was only scholarships too, no grants (Redhawk Eminence scholarship -$21,000 and UASP- $2,000).

WOW! Congratulations.

Similar stats to Beaudreau’s, a couple years later:
My DD (OOS - HS Class of 2017) had a 33 ACT and 3.65 GPA (competitive HS, ranked in Top 10 in state) and was awarded $16,500. We were hoping for a bit more, but agree with others who’ve said merit aid has gotten more competitive.

Considering Miami for engineering. Need to find out more about the honors program and how much hands in is the engineering department beginning as a freshman. Rigorous courses. AP or dual credit. 4.0 unweighted. ACT 35. Involved but not over involved with some leadership. Looking at merit scholarships

Do people think adding more scores helps for merit? ACT 35 sent, but never bothered to send SAT (1550) or subject tests (800 Math 2, 760 Chemistry) since they didn’t seem to add much for admission.

What’s the largest scholarship award for OOS students? 35 ACT 4.0 GPA rigorous course load private school mostly AP and dual credits. Received acceptance early to the University Scholars Program for Engineering. Cost is a major factor.

@ambkeegan Here is the scholarship grade that is found on Miami’s admission’s page website. Looks like there is potential for a sweet merit award.

Booajo we did the same, and now I’m wondering the same… Website says they accept test scores for scholarship consideration up till Feb.1st. Wondering what others thoughts/experiences are regarding sending subject scores? My daughter took the ACT with writing and got a 12 but didn’t send it. Only sent the 36 (without writing) because it was a point higher and since they don’t require the writing, she was thinking less is more.

Hoping for full tuition with an ACT 35 and GPA 4.0. Plus still applying to other schools. Cost is a major factor

@ambkeegan Just a little advice, if you are hunting for merit aid based on stats alone then the private universities are a better bet for you. If you are in-state for Miami University it very well could end up the lowest price option, but if you are oos then it probably won’t be.
