Hi! I am a student and was accepted to Miami and I could not be more thrilled. I am oos with a 3.5 gpa and 31 ACT, I applied early October and have not heard anything back about merit aid. I know someone who applied 1 month before me with slightly better stats than I have, got merit aid this week. I sent an email to my counselor asking about it and never heard back about a week ago. Should I call the financial office and ask for money? I’m not so sure what to say because it is my number 1 choice and my parents might not let me go if we do not get any money, should I mention that? Also, should I mention I got 15k a year from a school of similar rank (Marquette), lastly, should I be the one to call the financial office or should my parents? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!
@cbros45 I think your first step is to find out what your actual financial aid package looks like. They are very busy this time of year so you might want to pick up the phone and call them instead of e-mail. Once you know what the aid does or doesn’t include, you can establish your net price and decide if you can afford Miami. It’s up to you if you want to ask them for more money or not, but I doubt that using Marquette’s $15,000/yr scholarship will work because that is an expensive private school whose net cost would still be higher than Miami with no aid.
Over the weekend my D and I attended the “Make it Miami” event as well as the Presidential Open House. In my opinion this is a must attend event. Even if the decision has been made, it was extremely informative. Not to mention, you talk directly to the right personnel. After this event I’m on board and she will be attending Miami.
@college dad 2B DId they give you the additional money you were looking for or did you just decided to accept their offer?
@EDHDAD I did speak with them regarding additional money. More money is available for a need based situation. If someone is in that situation I would ask. Obviously not guaranteed, but without a doubt I would ask. We will be accepting the offer as it stands. The “Make it Miami” was the game changer for me. This is clearly a solid university and I truly believe Dr. Crawford is the right person at the helm. Did you commit?
@college dad 2B Right now Miami is in our top two, but we are still waiting on a few more decisions. We are going out there for Make It Miami in April. Miami is so much less money than the others I really hope my son likes it.
@EDHDAD it’s an awesome campus. For us too. It was significantly less than the other offers. I really think he will enjoy “Make it Miami”. Best of luck. I would love to hear his and yours feedback. Ps. Presidential Open House is a must to attend.
My DD and I are going to Make It Miami in late March. I have not seen the school, but she saw it in the fall with her dad and loved it. We are from northern VA so it has hit all the buttons for her to go so far away. I don’t see the Presidential Open House on the tentative schedule. Is this an extra invitation or just an option not on the general schedule that I’ve looked at on the website? Thank you.
@dmsh68 The Presidential Open House is by invitation. If your daughter was admitted to UHP or UASP, she should have received an invite. If I remember correctly, it came first by email and then by mail.
@dmsh68 also I think the only March date for the presidential open house was the 9th. On some other dates it looked like UHP and UASP had breakfasts but not the open house thing.
Thank you!! That helps!
I received 19k a year, instate
@myron3335 can you share stats?
Just for clarity for those who are comparing awards, would that $19K in-state be merit and need combined? The reason I ask is I don’t believe in-state tuition is even $19K.
@poshicaca @CWAE182025 That is strictly merit. No need aid. I attended Summer Scholars, which is supposed to give a boost in aid received, also the Bridges Programs which was a scholarship within my package, also received 2k from the UASP. I am also African American, which I heard helps. But Stats: Valedictorian, Weight GPA: 4.43, Non-Weighted: 4.00, SAT 1400, Student Council President, National Honors Society President, Intern at a world renowned televisions/radio broadcasting station and I work full time. First Generation College Student, only 1 AP, but 32 Credit hours at my city’s local university of dual enrollment.
very impressive, @myron3335!
Agreed:)
@Heiditree my daughter is in state and received full tuition plus $2,000 for the scholars program— so $17,000. She is a NMF and should receive the $1,000 as well. Stats were 36 ACT 4.0 unweighted GPA, varsity 3 season athlete and captain. Editor/founder of literary magazine and national scholastic winner for writing. We will be attending Make it Miami at the end of the month.
@2manycollegequestions4me Congratulations to your daughter. That is an awesome offer. And what fantastic accomplishments. Is she going to Miami? My son made his decision last week. He just felt that was the place for him. I have just driven around the campus once so I am looking forward to learning more about Miami over the next four years.
She is waiting to hear from Kenyon (her first choice) and Denison. She is hoping to compete for the full tuition scholarships (such a long shot, but still trying to stay hopeful.) She loves literature, theatre and writing and Kenyon seems like her absolute perfect fit. But she is staying open to Miami because of the incredible offer. She visited, and while it wasn’t the small LAC she imagined herself at, she felt like it was big enough that she’d hopefully be able to find her nitch. UKY is her other option— Patterson Scholarship is full tuition + 20,000 for NMF. She got into Lewis honors which may help it feel about smaller, but who are we kidding, it is still a huge campus. Just have to see what Kenyon and Denison offer, weigh all of the pros and cons and make a decision from there. Grateful to have great options, but can’t wait until this is all over and decided!
