Merit aid for B students?

Union, Hobart-William Smith, Syracuse, Endicott, Roger Williams, RPI

I thought Drew would be a reach along with Farleigh Dickinson and thus merit aid would be scant. My thinking was that merit aid would come from S’s safety schools. I think I may have been underselling my S’s options. Am I wrong or is a 1200 SAT math/verbal about average? I worry about the drop-off in his mid-terms and finals as compared to his quarterly grades. I think it might hurt him in the app. process. My D applied to 16 schools… But she had a 1370 SAT and was top 10% so… many more options. S is just as bright (I think) but not the same priorities or work ethic. Boys seem to be late bloomers academically… At least in my family. Some great suggestions and I’m getting busy.

Oh forgot majors. S is interested in construction management, (that major will limit our options), also environmental science or computer science.

I know Drew has taken students with 1200 SAT’s and they are optional. They have a new business major, but the stronger majors are environmental science and computer science. I wouldn’t cross them off the list…and you might get a free application if you show interest.

Drew is much more selective than Fairleigh. You may need to do a separate internet search/cc posting for schools which offer construction management–which is probably uncommon in small schools, as opposed to a Drexel (whcih might have a cross-registration program with St Joe).

With your requirements (please correct if wrong or add if I’ve missed)

1) Small class size (and college size too)
2) Construction Mgmt, Env Science, Comp Sci Majors
3) Merit aid for a B+ ~3.2/1200 SAT
4) Not too urban
5) Within 3 hours of Central MA
6) Looking to pay < $35K per year

you will end up with a fairly small list of schools.

I’ll reiterate a couple of schools I mentioned to you earlier - Utica and Norwich.

Both are around 2000 students with class sizes around 20 and IIRC no 100+ lecutures.
Both have Construction Mgmt, Env Sci, and Comp Sci programs.
A 1200 SAT should put him in the top quartile, a good position for merit aid.
Both schools COA < $40K so not much merit aid is needed.
Both schools within geographic parameter.
Norwich is in a small town 10 minutes from Montpelier VT.
Utica is in a residential neighborhood about 1/2 mile from downtown (as much as you can say there is a downtown) Utica.

I’m not too familiar with some of the others mentioned in this thread. Perhaps the folks who chimed in can put them through these filters to see how they work?

Wow. Thanks goaliedad. My S is at times ambivalent about the major. I think a lot will depend on the schools we visit. He seems as though he would be equally satisfied with the other two majors mentioned, info science or environmental science. Norwich is an option, but I’ll have to ask about the gender imbalance. I know in D’s case she did not want a single sex school and I suspect he may want something more balanced, gender wise, than Norwich. Utica is definitely on our short list.

I understand the ambivalence with regards to the major. If it makes you feel more better, until about 3 months ago, we had the same situation. However, I think both of our kids are “practically oriented” about their college experience - that is something they can put their hands on as opposed to spending their career in academia.

The good news about both of those schools is that they have many other “practical” type degrees, which is where this type of kids cycles around in.

The bad news (at least for the guys on Saturday night) is that these schools tend to be overly male in population. More girls tend to end up at the pure LACs where these types of majors aren’t offered. Of course, you need to emphasize that the girls at these schools are more likely to be the type of interest to him ;)

BTW, goaliegirl didn’t put any constraints about the male/female ratio as long as it wasn’t an all-girls school (too many girls together without guys = drama in her book). Plus there are a lot of times she like to hang out with the guys.

Alfred State (same city, not same school as Alfred U) and Clarkson in NY offer construction management
